Re: 1930 82-B Rearend

The available axle ratios were 6.60 and 5.14.

At 2200 RPM, with the 6.60 axle, your speed would be 30 MPH; with the 5.14 axle, 40 MPH.

Re: Matt, a pic question

Russ, I should have mentioned that you should put back whatever combination of shims that were originally used with your axle. The shims set the gear tooth contact patch and backlash. They were selected at the factory during assembly. Some used one thick shim, others used a thick and thin shim, whil...

Re: Matt, a pic question

Russ, First, what looks like a 1/2" gap in the picture is actually the flange of the pinion bearing sleeve. It's just a blacker shade of black. I cheated by just painting the edge of it black, rather than powder coating it. The camera accentuates the difference. Looks much closer in real-life! ...

Re: Dang, extra parts again

Russ,

You say you've got your diff all sorted out? Is it together? Did you install a shim between the pinion bearing sleeve/housing flange and the diff housing (that is, if it had one to begin with)?

Re: Missing something at spring perch?

Hey Matt, this isn't the first time i've noticed how much you enjoyed building your truck. It's your idea of a thing of beauty, and coincidentally...mine too. Not likely mine will ever look similar to yours, but it'll be a great driver all the same. Did you do your own plating? I recall seeing year...

Re: Missing something at spring perch?

I love all the statements and the replies, along with the great pictures it makes for interesting reading along with a few chuckles. Are we talking oversize hole = fudge factor? Fudge factor is precisely what it is Shorthaul. Note the additonal fudging evident in the picture below. The top outside ...

Matt: Hey, it's your truck. Do it to it like you want. I'm was serious. Very pretty! :D -- Drew Thanks. Maybe I did get a bit carried away, as some of the prettiest stuff is hidden: http://www.smokypond.com/gallery/download/645-4/IMG_8306-050.jpg My "Parts is Parts" gallery: http://www.sm...

Re: Missing something at spring perch?

... i'm not sure what you mean by the following line..."tolerance stack-up"? Also, does one disregard accurate positioning of the stud before tightening? Seems like a really crappy design with so much slop in there. The hole is oversize to allow for tolerance stack-up, and to allow the pa...

Re: Missing something at spring perch?

There is no bushing Russ. Just a washer and a nut (see my spring perch below). The hole is oversize to allow for tolerance stack-up, and to allow the parts to be assembled. If the hole were made to size, you would never be able to "rotate" the brake armature stud through the hole. http://w...

Rollingsculpture, those are steel drums.

Also, last time I checked, a magnet WILL stick to cast iron.

Re: Brake Linings revisited

Eric's photos labeled MVC-008E and MVC-009E are definitely cast iron drums. Steel drums did not have the protruding tab seen on the rim of the drum in those 2 phots.

Re: Brake Linings revisited

In my opinion, fade isn't the problem. I saw the comments on Ford Barn regarding the use of woven linings with cast iron drums, but not many comments regarding first hand experience with bonded non-woven linings with steel drums. My metallurgy experience tells me that virtually any brake lining mate...
