Re: Warford Auxiliary Transmission
Hello David, I found that there were two different sizes of input splines on the Warford transmissions. One probably for use behind the Model A three-speed transmission and another for the four-speed. Luckily I got the complete setup for the use behind the 4-speed. It came with a special internal sp...

Re: This is a bit confusing
First check if the radiator is 3 or 4 rows deep. Ford introduced a 4 row deep radiator about March 1930 and used it till June 1930. These looked similar in shape as the earlier radiators but they were 4 rows deep instead of 3 and had 35 tubes per row making a total of 140 tubes used with 1 extra dea...

Re: Set of 1929 Bud rims with hubcaps
I don't think the Budd Company made any of that style wheel. I have some very nice ones stamped "Cleve Weld" on the inner tube side of wheel which I believe stands for "Cleveland Welding" as the manufacturer.

Re: drive line removal from rear axle
On the worm drive rears a splined coupling had two pins, one to fasten it to the worm and another to fasten it to the driveshaft. When the bevel gear rears came out in the beginning of 1930 the driveshaft was riveted to the splined coupling with one rivet and the other end of the splined coupling wa...

Re: 1928 and 1929 bevel gear rear axles
The early AA bevel gear is completely different than the later '30-'31 type. No parts will interchange. These rears were made like the smaller "A" rears (only in a larger version) and were available in a low speed (stamped with an "A" for the low speed version or a "B" ...

Re: 1930ish with BB cab
It looks like you have the late '31 Budd built steel top cab (used from September 1931 to end of production). The rear end and rear suspension in your picture is still AA. The BB's rear suspension was completely different than the AA's.

Re: Help with tires
I actually have some old tires with both sizes marked on the sidewalls. The 30X5 tires are also marked 6.00X20. The 32X6 are also marked 6.50X20.

Re: worm drive drive shaft
You may want to read the January 1930 Service Bulletin. It talks about the change in not riveting the coupling to the pinion and drive shaft. If the coupling has the one pin removed (the rear one), then a new u-joint has to be used on the front of the drive shaft that has a collar in it to prevent t...

Re: tire wear on outside slight one side
A worn ball on the rear of the radius rod, incorrect assembly, and/or broken springs on the cap assembly can all change the caster of the front axle. A bent axle, especially the "A" axle used on the earlier trucks, can also cause tire wear problems. Before I do a kingpin job, I usually rem...

Re: What happens when a flat occurs
You may find that some truck tire shops will not even touch these older rims because they don't have the OSHA required numbering that matches the rim and lock ring as compatable. We had wall charts that had to be checked before assembly due to insurance reasons. Of course the wheels on our AA's didn...

Re: battery disconnect switch
I have a truck that the previous owner mounted a heavy duty cut-off switch in the top hole of the left rear motor mount bracket. Only have to open the hood to get at it.

Re: Oversize Model A looking rear axle
Thanks Ed for the info on where to find the markings on this rear end assembly. Probably wouldn't have noticed it unless I had an idea where to look. Mine has a "B" stamped on the upper end of the rear torque tube flange and it is the "high speed ratio". You're also quite right o...

Oversize Model A looking rear axle
Does anybody have a "AA" rear axle that looks like a over-grown Model "A" one in their truck? According to the "Judging Standards" this is known as "Design 3" and was used beginning in early 1929. The "Design 4" low speed bevel gear AA rear was put i...
