Re: Floor board
I made mine also, using Neil's excellent information. For authenticity, just remember they were mass produced and could therefore be a little rough. In other words, they weren't made by cabinet makers LOL. Finish was with a black wood preservative; I used Woodlife CreoCoat.

Jim,
Did you see my reply to your other post about my spoked wheels. I might be able to help you out with some early '28 stuff.

Re: Hub cap installation
It didn't take all that much force. I don't think it even moved the needle on the press. It mainly needed a centered, steady force to overcome the strong springiness of the tabs on the cap. I wouldn't think removal would be a problem.

Re: Hub cap installation
I tried tapping the hub caps into place, but they just wanted to spring back. So I ended up using two methods that I thought I'd share. Both utilized an adapter (see photo of adapter with blue masking tape) the same outside diameter as the outside of the hubcap. I also placed a circle made from pape...

Re: Spare Tire Carrier on 88-A Bed Trouble
It appears that the wheel is facing downward, with the lock ring toward the carrier. Is this the correct orientation?

Hub cap installation
I'm ready to install the hubcaps on my E28 (spoked) wheels and was wondering how folks have accomplished this. The retention tabs seem very stout. Does a single big hit work best or multiple smaller hits around the edge? How have you protected the cap from damage during installation?

Another great publication, Neil! Received mine and read it cover to cover. As usual your technical documentation along with practical information for restoration is very useful! Thank you and keep up the great work!

Re: AA wheel manufacturing
Jim, Yes, I was fortunate that the wheels on my truck were in pretty good shape. I've been working on my truck for about 4 years and can see the finish line. Sounds like you're just getting started. I've done a lot of swap meets, rummaging around junk yards, and probably most importantly had a lot o...

Re: AA wheel manufacturing
After a more detailed inspection I have found marks indicating that the wheel rims were rolled and then butt welded. Actually quite nice work given the early stage of welding technology available. AA wheel manufacturing
I'm in the process of restoring the wheels for my E28 AA project and just got them back from the blaster. I don't see any seam in the rim like on the car wheels, so I'm just curious if anyone knows how the AA rims were manufactured.

Rear axle nut torque?
I can't seem to find the proper torque for the rear axle nut in my early '28 worm drive axle. Anyone have better documentation?

Re: Which hollow punch set?
I have the hand/hammer style and it has worked good for everything I've asked of it so far (similar applications). I would think the drill version might be a little challenging to control the position and the material you are punching might twist along with the punch.

U-joint rebuild kit?
I ordered a standard u-joint rebuild kit (cross & bearings) and found that that the car kits won't work for the AA u-joints. They are smaller. Is there anyone that offers an AA u-joint rebuild kit?

Try Tom Godish in Portland, OR. He helped me with the inner felt seals for my rear axle. 503-282-2212
