Re: I need a six by six u joint.
At present, the "bell" or whatever you call the end of the torque tube would push against this brace. Without the bell-cone thing that the torque tube is supposed to push against, the Universal joint will fit. Of course it can't push against this brace. I need about another half inch, like...

Re: I need a six by six u joint.
I'm building a speedster using as many John Deere parts as possible, but the drive train is model A. When I first took it for a test drive with just the model A 3 speed, it was too fast. By my calculations, first gear was probably 9mph. That's not safe for tooling around at a tractor show or driving...

I need a six by six u joint.
I've added a dual high to an A chassis which has a six spline output shaft and the drive shaft is also six spline. So far the only one I've found is off a believe a slightly later car and the tube that meets the drive shaft is too short. Is there someone who builds a 6x6 U joint? The outlet tube nee...

Chronology of the 3 and 4 speed and under drive.
Can someone straighten me out on what was introduced when? Were all early 28s three speeds, then came the underdrive (dual high) and then the four speed? Either of which could be retrofitted to an older vehicle?

Re: How does this come apart?
I guess the coupler has to come off the shaft, but does it have a pin through it, or is it just stuck on? The flange/housing slide back and forth so it is ready to go. It was getting dark when I got it to this point so I didn't have a lot of time to examine it. Once the u-joint is removed, then the...

Re: Disassembly question
In looking at what I have here I now notice the frame has been extended on the truck. You have the tranny, underdrive, a shaft about 20" long and then the regular drive shaft.

Disassembly question
If I want to remove the underdrive from a 1928 AA, do I need to start by pulling the rear axle back, then the short drive shaft, then the underdrive? Or is there some way to remove it without taking everything behind or in front of it?

Re: Underdrive question-no don't want to run it backwards
Or !! Switch to the low speed worm drive rear end. 7:25 to 1, and then add a Utillity TT over under drive at the rear end. The standard under drive for an AA is the way to go. I have a three speed, with under drive and low speed worm. Parade walking speed is , 2nd gear, in under drive and medium id...

Re: Underdrive question-no don't want to run it backwards
While that may be true and is something to consider, in order to graft it into the drive shaft there would have to be machining on both ends. I believe an AA underdrive would bolt up to the three speed.

Underdrive question-no don't want to run it backwards
I am building a speedster/rat rod type of thing using as many tractor parts as possible. The transmission is a three speed model A and the rear end is also model A car. In my first test drive, I had a problem I never planned on, it is too fast in low gear. I need to be able to putt around at shows a...
