Re: early 30

Once again reaffirming that when it comes to Ford A's and AA's, you simply can't be that dogmatic about when changes occured...

Re: early 30

Neil - *A1643596* - so its definately a replacement engine, no AA. It also has the '29 style commercial headlamps. What do you think about the screw on gas cap? Did they switch to the bayonet lock from January, or was there a changeover time?

Re: early 30

I have an early '30AA, with a February '30 date stamped on the 5-hole Budd wheels. It has '30 running gear and duals on the rear, and the cab is the square style with '29 style dash and '30 commercial bumpers. The gas fill is the '29 style screw-on rather than the bayonet lock. The engine is from a ...

Might be a TT bed too. How many side sockets? TT would have 4 rather than 6

Re: Ford Factory AA Tool Kits

Neil's correct about Ford not making any of the tools in the toolkit, they were jobbed out to several manufacturers and you can make a bit of a study of the various makers marks on them. The Script seems to get rarer with time - as Neil mentions most of the '28 tools are script, as were the late Mod...

Re: Ford Factory AA Tool Kits

Neil -- Just sent you a higher resolution photo. My lugnut wrench doesn't match Neil's drawing, although similar. My breaker bar does match the drawing. Both came with the truck. You really need to look at the Standards for details on the tools (with the caveat that Neil mentions), there are specifi...

Re: Ford Factory AA Tool Kits

Picture of the toolkit for our early '30 AA Stake bed. Please note, the tire iron is not correct, I havn't found one of the AA irons yet. Also, the breaker-bar for the lugnut wrench and handle for the jack aren't shown here. The tire pressure gauge was optional. 1930 AA Stake Toolkit resampled and r...

Re: Ford Factory AA Tool Kits

Some have Ford script, some don't. That's the way they were too - if you look in the standards for '31 tools some were script and some weren't by then. None of the specialized AA tools have script, nor the jacks, jack handles, tire pumps, or tire irons. I have our tools in a display case I take to s...

Re: Zenith and Tillotson carbs .. Which is original on our 28

I'd be stunned if Bert's couldn't fix you up with the appropriate Zenith - he's always had things I needed no matter how esoteric, a carb should be easy.

Very nice folks to deal with there as well - we bought our 150B from them last year.

Sorry - forgot to include in the standard A kit the Alemite grease-gun and owners manual.

Re: Ford Factory AA Tool Kits

Check the MARC Judging Standards for details. Basically the 13 piece kit was the same as the Model A kit; head nut/sparkplug wrench, monkey wrench, 2 open end wrenches, screwdriver, pliers, and tool pouch. Specific AA items include the tire irons (15in. spoon end with brake adjuster hole), heavy scr...

Try Bert's Model A in Denver, Co, he has an incredible supply of original parts. Be prepared to pay for it though.

Re: poor brakes on our early 28 .

I have to agree with Mark. I can slide the wheels on my AA with or without a load and without having to stand on the brakes. Properly adjusted, the Model A/AA brakes will work pretty well - but everything has to be correct. Get a good set of instructions and go through the system completely. By the ...

Re: top wood for 1931 truck cab

I used a top kit for my '30 pickup I got from Bratton's. Very good quality kit and the components fit pretty well, but not perfectly. After 80+ years I would guess the cabs "settle" differently leading to subtle changes in dimensions. Bottom-line, you'll probably need to do some tweaking o...

Re: How fast can the 28 Model AA go ?

Mark - the engine in our '30 runs like watch but does tend to overheat after a long pull up a hill due to the smaller 28/29 radiator. He'll do 30-32 OK, but above 35 starts to sound a bit stressed - just sounds more comfortable at around 22-25ish and I don't feel compelled to go faster than that wit...
