Front end alignment
My front end troubles seem to carry on. Now I'm able to measure the different values, but how to translate them? My reference is Jim Schild's A and AA books but I don't know how to translate the figures: Caster he says should be 3 ½ degrees. This is the easy part as I measure everything in degrees t...

Re: AA Snowmobile, 12 Volts?
The change you suggest can be done without any problems or damage anywhere. I did it on my truck and it runs perfectly with the 12 V system. You need a 12 V alternator and notice though it has a negative ground it will not affect the starter's rotation direction. Next: You have to change the field c...

Moto-Meter
How do I get a Moto-Meter to work in a Ford AA radiator as it is very unlikely that it will ever dip the receptor in the water.

Front end problems
Finally the 11th June I got my truck approved and got my licence plates. What a joy! But the test driving on the road revealed problems with the front end. Steering components to be more exact. The drag link and the connecting rod rub so hard against each other that the paint is scratched away. I ha...

Front U-jooint
Hello, Interesting correspondance. I thought the front U-joint was common on government trucks. I was told by an american friend that it was mounted to avoid taking the engine or the rear axle out of the truck when the clutch needed repair or replacement. It was allready available in 1931. My truck ...

Shock absorbers for a '31 157" truck
Two questions: 1) I have realised that I need to mount shock absorbers on the rear axle. The truck is equipped with a pair of Maremont 20X helper springs. Can I mount shock absorbers also? That is: Is there room enough on the rear axle to do so and still keep the helper springs? 2) If Yes. Does anyo...

Fabric roof
Hi, I (we, my wife and I) did this a few months ago. I had round headed as well as flat headed nails. It appeared, that the good idea was to use the flat headed nails to attach the fabric to the rails before you attach the trim and the rain gutters. Start in the middle front and moove out to both si...

#ID
Hi, The engine number is the ID-number. The engine may have been changed several times, but the original ID-number was punched into the frame just under the left front door post. My frame was very rusty too. But I - actually my son with his young eyes - was able to read the number after the frame ha...

Pinion bearings
The bearing and outer race numbers for the Timken bearings are: 44150 and 44348 11. I do not have the numbers on the differential bearings. The rear wheel bearings are to my knowledge not produced anymore and can only be obtained from a AA parts dealer. A warning: The differential and pinion bearing...

Emergency brakes
Hi A question on emergency brakes. I have just been test driving (slowly) my '31 AA for a few kilometres. I found out that the emergency brake has a nasty habit of suddenly and without notice it will get stuck (brake) but very quickly hereafter come loose again - (it happens more often when I revers...

Head removal
Hi Russel, Is there something you don't tell? If it is possible to start the engine. Loosen all the head nuts 1/8", drain off the water and remove the fan belt. Start the engine. This will definately loosen the head. If you can't start the engine. You might try to make a yoke by the help of a p...

Hi Steve
The ball bearings (gear box), front wheel bearings and differential bearings are still available from Timken. Just measure the ID (d), OD (D) and the width (T) of the bearing, look it up in their catalouge and order. They have a comprensive home page: http://www.timken.com. That's what I did.
