Re: 29 AA express truck, # 82-A

Kirt, What you are looking for is a 1928-1930 AA Express Truck. The Walton's truck is a 1929 AA with an 82-A closed cab and 89-A express cargo body. The '28 Express truck would have steel spoke wheels and the '30 express would have the five spoke disk wheels. Attached is a copy of Ben Staub's '29 AA...

Re: steering woes?

The A and AA has the same steering. There is a 7 tooth (28/29) and 2 tooth (29/31) design. Both styles can be rebuilt and there are people offering this service. The steering box should not have grease. It should use the same oil as the transmission and rear axle. Grease may have been used to cover ...

The locking stake is for the right stake rack and fits into the center right stake pocket. Details for the lock is in the April 1998 club newsletter. A picture is below:

Re: rear end swaps

Attched is a picture of the '29 bevel gear rear axle. I this what you have? This a very uncommon axle. Most '28 AA's do not have separate emergency brake bands. You can put a '29 bevel gear axle or a '30/'31 bevel gear axle into a '28 but you will not be able to hook up the emergency brackes without...

Re: NOS 1929 Bevel Gear Driveshaft & Pinion Gear

All '28 and '29 AA's had a worm drive rear axle except for a few which had a special bevel gear axle which looks like an oversized Model A axle. Attached is a picture of this special bevel gear axle.

I believe that Eric has a drive shaft and pinion for this special axle.

Re: NOS 1929 Bevel Gear Driveshaft & Pinion Gear

Eric,
I would like to see the photos at wilsmor@juno.com. Do you know what gear ratio the pinion gear is for?

Some time ago (maybe a year), there was someone looking for the high speed pinion/drive shaft. Hopefully the owner will see your ad.

Re: Questions about worm drive rear ends.

Bob, The '29 AA's originally had a worm drive axle (except for a very few with a unique bevel gear axle as shown in the picture below). The '28 steel spoke wheels can be used on the '29 axles. Ford released the more common bevel gear axle starting January 1930. However, commercial vehicles (A and AA...

Re: 21" aa wire wheel

You will not find a 21" AA wheel. All AA's used 20" wheels. I have some of these 20" wheels to sell and can e-mail you pictures and prices. They are without the lock rings and are priced from $40 (poor) to $95 (very nice). I can ship from Boulder, CO to your zip code. If you have any ...

Re: Questions about worm drive rear ends.

The worm drive gears are the same for '28 and '29. So, if you have a '29 worm drive axle which is a high speed, then you can remove the gears and put them in the '28 axle. Your should expect to be able to go 40 mph (max of 45 mph) with the high speed gears. Finding a good set of gears will be very h...

Re: AA Mirror bracket

The 1930 82-A closed cab with a platform (with or without stake racks) would have originally had an AA-17745 mirror bracket and A-17728 mirror assembly. This mirror set up is shown in the Ford archive photo below. A closer view of this set up is also shown. The AA-17745 mirror bracket could be mount...

Re: AA Mirror Bracket

It is too bad that this kind of miss information occures on Ebay (or anywhere else). But, I see it happen frequently. When I actually take the time to check into an issue, it normally turns out that the seller actually believes in what he is selling. The attached pictures shows a pair of extended mi...

Re: AA Mirror Bracket

Hello s147881, The hinge pillar mounted AA mirror bracket is shown below. It is part AA-17745 and is 11-1/16" long. The part number is on the blade. It was only used on the 82-A closed cab (late '28 through mid 1930). For the 82-B closed cab, hinge mounted mirror brackets were used. There is an...

Re: Serial Numbers

Note that the table does not provide a date when a vehicle was assembled. It identifies when an engine was assembled. By the end of 1930, Ford had produced an excess of 215,556 engines over vehicles. So, a September 1930 engine most likely went into a November or December 1930 vehicle.
