Re: Timing gear shreaded

I'm going to start something here, but that may be a good thing... Fiber timing gears have been used for many many years without the 'shredding' issue. Maybe the gear that was put in your truck was a cheap one. I think the good ones with brass impregnated are good ones. I, for one, don't like the al...

Re: Early (2 piece) brake cross shafts won't come out

I seem to remember when I removed mine from a spare frame a couple of years ago that I did not have to remove either end. Rather, if I rotated the shaft to the back of the frame, they came right out. They sure would not have been riveting the shafts together on the frame while on the assembly line.....

Re: Differential substitutions for higher speed

I would almost guarantee that custom gears would cost more than a Mitchell. Why re-invent the wheel. Since I put a Mitchell on my truck with high speed rear, I can easily do 45 to 50 on the highway. Frank I can do 50 with high speed gearing alone. I guess when I mentioned the speeds I achieved, I i...

Re: Differential substitutions for higher speed

My truck is an early with 5:1 rear. I put a 36% Mitchell overdrive in and could not be happier. I can cruise at 45-50 all day long just jumping from 3rd to overdrive and back. The install was easy and all the parts fit as advertised. You just have to anticipate your stops a little more in advance......

Re: your opinion of mitchell overdrive

The Mitchell is called a gear splitter not an 'overdrive' by the manufacturer. You would have with a 4 speed in front, essentially 8 forward gears and 2 reverse gears. You can shift into 'Mitchell' with the Ford transmission in any gear you like. So, yes, you can leave the Mitchell in low range and ...

Re: your opinion of mitchell overdrive

If I remember correctly, I paid just under $3000. To remove the springs from the rear, I unbolted the saddle bracket on the axle tube and left the springs on the frame.

Re: your opinion of mitchell overdrive

Well, it's time to give a report. The installation in the chassis was as easy as it was on the bench. I raised it onto my lift and dropped the complete rear end assembly to the floor. I disconnected the rear axle at the springs and took out torque tube and radius rods with it. The new assembly went ...
