Re: Results of my 30/31 rear end inspection for backlash

"Finally" I was able to upload my last 2 pics concerning the spider and pinion gears. The spider and pinion gears on the right are the #79-4211 spider and #79-4215 spider pinions that were manufactured for the 1937-39 one ton Ford truck. The left is the AA spider and pinion. You can see th...

Re: Results of my 30/31 rear end inspection for backlash

The server here is still bummed out and won't load pictures so I'll try again tomorrow. Hey Luke, the spider I am using for demonstration here, is the spider Molly had in her 6.6-1 differential, and it was sitting in my garage. The one Gary sent me is at the mechanics shop with the rear end. That sp...

Re: Results of my 30/31 rear end inspection for backlash

The server on this web site has been kicking my butt for an hour. I'll try to post more pics later. Maybe that server will cough up that hair ball by then? :x

Re: Results of my 30/31 rear end inspection for backlash

I received the 79-4211 and 79-4215 NOS spider and spider pinion gears today, and matched them up to the AA spider assembly with these findings: A original tag on the pinion gear says the gear was made for a 1937-39 Ford truck. In appearance it looks to be made of some kind of brass composition mater...

Re: Where does the horn go?????

Any Ford archive pictures you see of the AA, the horn is always mounted beneath the headlight on the light bar. The wiring harness is made for that and the radiator shell is equiped with a hole for the conduit that routes the wiring from the horn to the wiring harness that comes from the light switc...

Re: Results of my 30/31 rear end inspection for backlash

Hi Russ. I think you meant “elliptical” (oval?), but I can say I’ve never heard of that happening. About half of the rivets on my old ring gear were loose enough to turn them in their seats(with some force), but those rivets look to be about 3/8 inch and are so big and many, I don’t think the ring g...

Re: Lug nuts on 28 Truck

Hi Bob, I haven’t seen any data that recommends a torque setting on the lug nuts. Maybe Neil will jump in on this, but what I understand, the “rule of thumb” is: tighten to a tight fit and retighten after 100 miles. Now that’s what the Ford Bulletins say for AA rear axle nuts.

Re: Results of my 30/31 rear end inspection for backlash

I have been posting the chronology of events in my search for NOS parts, as they occurred. I want to clarify that my unanswered call from Eric Moore that I posted on this topic January 5th, was not to imply that he was ignoring my calls, but only that it was in the chronology of events taking place ...

Re: Axle configuration

Since it seems I had a situation similar to yours, I can only tell you how I finally got the hub off, and maybe I just got lucky. With a puller on the hub, it started to come off but stopped after about ¾ of an inch gap between drum and back plate. The drum became difficult to turn as well. I pushed...

Re: Results of my 30/31 rear end inspection for backlash

Hey Red, thanks for the input. I couldn't find anyone that has axles for the 30/31 AA and I did a lot of digging. I came close with NOS Ford in NC, and I was able to get NOS spider pinions from Dennis Carpenter in NC. They are not the spiders with the AA prefix, but rather the 79 prefix. According t...

Re: Axle configuration

Sometimes when an axle bearing fails, the bearing casing cuts into the axle race and the hub and prevents removal of the hub no matter how hard you pull on it. Part of the bearing casing sits in the groove and anchors the hub against the axle.

Re: Results of my 30/31 rear end inspection for backlash

Thanks for your input Bladehorse, but I wouldn’t be content driving Molly around until she failed. I couldn’t take the “clunk” every time I stopped or started. Whether that would be another 100K miles or not. I’ve never thought of comparing her to a locomotive or drilling rig. Molly runs with the us...

Re: Results of my 30/31 rear end inspection for backlash

Didn’t mean to scare you Luke. I guess you don’t know what you’ll find in that banjo if you’re truly lookin’! It seems that MAC’s Antique Auto Parts is the only A/AA vendor selling the reproduction spider and spider pinion gears for the 30/31 AA Trucks, but they are out of stock and their su...

Re: Results of my 30/31 rear end inspection for backlash

After considerable thought, I couldn’t possibly have caused that damage to the thrust surface on the ring gear. I almost had to get it that way. The race surface on the back of the axle gear is smooth and doesn’t have any scoring as on the ring gear. I purchased that 5.14 rear end from a ford gravey...

Results of my 30/31 rear end inspection for backlash

Finally got the Banjo cracked and gearing removed for inspection. I will have to replace the ring gear as the thrust surface for the axle is scored and worn about .020 in.(see pic below) The gears on the axle itself are also worn about .015 on either side. (see oil puddles in pic below) The spider g...
