Re: U-Joint Grease: Cornhead or Today's Standards
I use what they refer as cornhead grease in my steering boxes. Works well in them. Doesn't leak out like regular gear oil. Ford did recommend its' use in steering boxes a little later than the Model A period. Tractor Supply sells it. Probably won't hurt in the driveline once in a while to loosen the...

Re: GarWood Dump box
My 1934 Wood brand bodies (built by Gar Wood Industries) brochure does show a model C-4 that was available in 1, 1 1/2, and 2 cubic yards. They all used the same D6 underbody hoist and states that these "standard sizes fit all short wheelbase 1 1/2 ton trucks". If you want copies of the li...

Re: GarWood Dump box
Elfox, I have quite a lot of Wood and GarWood literature. My early stuff lists the company as "Wood Hydraulic Hoist & Body Company--Detroit, Michigan". A February 1934 catalog lists the company as Gar Wood Industries, Inc at 7924 Riopelle Street, Detroit, Michigan. Probably just a name...

Re: Grinding going into 4th gear
When your shifting into high gear, you're are actually connecting the front of the mainshaft to the rear of the input shaft. Often I found that the front of the mainshaft is worn where the bearing rides on it and messes up the alignment between it and the input shaft. Other factors can also mess up ...

Re: Front Hub Dust Seal
I have a NOS aftermarket felt seal that fits the front of 28-29 AA Ford trucks (according to the box it came in). It's comprised of two thin steel washers and a felt seal that goes between them. I don't remember the company that made it. I'll have to dig it out to see.

Re: 1930/31 Loose Ring gear Rivets
What you have to watch for is that rivet sizes are different than standard bolt sizes usually because the rivet was meant to be squashed to fit the hole tight (sometimes heated to achieve this). If you're going to try bolts, maybe a metric size would fit tighter in a rivet hole than a standard Ameri...

Re: Brake drums
The pressed steel brake drums were ground true on brake drum grinding machines. I purchased a old truck brake drum grinding machine several years ago and did some AA drums. Unfortunately after the correct size grinding stones were used up, I couldn't find any more that were the right size. Often the...

Re: Power Take Off
Although my fire truck has a Barton pump driven off the front of the crankshaft, some fire trucks that have a midship mounted pump used a power-take-off.

Re: Chassis serial numbers?
David, sometimes the 4-speed transmission can help confirm the approximate date of the vehicle, as long as it hasn't been changed along the way. The "WG" (Warner Gear) transmissions usually have casting dates on them. The box usually has one on the drivers side, and the top cover usually h...

Re: FAQ for AA dummies?
Although Ford didn't use any positive seal arrangement in the rear of the engine, it shouldn't leak much there unless their is a problem. A "little" oil did helped lube the radius rod ball under the flywheel housing. If it's dripping a lot of oil something is wrong, either the main bearing...

Re: AA truck Ride
Another important step is to check the fit of the rear spring seat to the axle housing. Often the top half of the seat is worn because lack of grease. If the seat does not pivot freely on the rear end housing it can make the truck ride ruffer. Often the top half of the seat though is worn a lot hard...

Re: Rear Axle Ratio?
David, Yes, you probably have a 6'6 ratio low speed. Try counting again and only leave the drum on one side turn. Either lock up the brake on one side, or if the wheels and tires are on leave it down so one side touches the ground and doesn't turn. The spider gears in the rear will mess up your coun...

Re: Brake Drums
The original AA pressed steel drums are hard to turn on modern drum turning equipment. Back in the day, pressed steel drums were ground true on brake drum grinding machines. I found an old truck drum grinding machine and did a few drums, but when I ran out of grinding stones I haven't been able to f...
