Re: Lift Cylinder

Yes, the chamfered collar looks typical of an older hydraulic cylinder. That should press against the packing material inside squeezing it against the cylinder shaft. Was there any packing material left inside?

Re: Lift Cylinder

These older cylinders usually used a rope packing type material. You have to remove the collar where the piston shaft exits the cylinder body. There are two threaded studs with nuts on that hold the collar to the cylinder. Once you remove the collar the packing material should be underneath it. Ther...

Re: WANTED- Ford Model BB bell housing

Hello Mark,
I could probably help you with a BB bell housing. I'd have unbolt it from a transmission and clean it up to make sure it is in good condition first. I'm from eastern Pennsylvania.

Re: ORIGINAL 'A' GENERATOR AND LIGHTS

The same thing can happen if you use one of the fuses that mounts to the starter that the Model A vendors sell. if you have a short somewhere and that fuse blows, it disconnects the battery from the system, the generator will run wild and blow out every bulb that is turned on in the system. It can e...

Re: Popping out of 4th gear

In 4th gear you're coupling the main drive gear (input shaft) to the mainshaft. The 3rd/4th sliding gear moves front and slides over the main drive gear. Did you check the internal teeth of the 3rd/4th gear? How about the wear on the front of the mainshaft where the mainshaft pilot bearing rides. If...

Re: Brake adjustment

Your brake levers should sit approximately 15 degrees toward the rear for the rear brakes and 15 degree towards the front for the front ones. When applied the lever and brake rod angle should not go past the 90 degree mark. Also make sure the brake rod return springs are working. After you pull your...

Re: hit another snafu

Stakebed, you should have no trouble bending your stems. In fact, around 1931 Schrader decided to reduce their valve stem offerings to seven "convertible" stems for truck tires. The "convertible" stems were then bent with a stem bender they offered. Schrader had a chart that woul...

Re: Loud clanking noise in top gear

My guess would be a badly worn couple shaft gear on the back of the trans output shaft and/or the front of the coupling shaft itself. Since, on the 4 speed, you are directly coupling the input and output shafts together in 4th gear and not using any other gears in the transmission I really doubt if ...

Re: Help with grease seal

Check with a Model T supplier that handles the "TT" truck worm drive seals such as Snyders. I believe the "TT" seals will fit.

Re: What oil to use in the worm drive rear

Lubriplate Lubricants has the specially made gear oils that will not attack the bronze gears. I use their SPO-288 gear oil for my worm drive trucks. This is a 680 W gear oil on the ISO viscosity grade scale. (This is the scale the repackaged products are being sold as for the Model A's so it seems s...

Re: preload on the bearings

The only spec I've found, and that was in the Model T Service Bulletins, was for the "TT" worm drive. It said the worm drive shaft should not be assembled unless there is from .006 to .015 clearance between the washer and bearing. I'd probably install the rear cap and check the front-back ...

Re: Tire recommendations?

I just bought a set of Lucas because they had a nice "truck tire" look to them. Unfortunately they are just available in the 6.00X20 size. That's OK, but single rear wheeled trucks should use 6.50X20 on the rear. Dual rear wheeled trucks are OK with the 6.00X20 all the way around. Maybe if...

Re: What oil to use in the worm drive rear

I'd double check with the vendor and ask him for the specs on the oil he is repackaging. It must say that it is compatible with brass and bronze components. Many modern automotive gear lubes have anti-wear additives that are not. It's easier to find the correct lube for worm drive applications in th...

Re: BB 5:17 gears fit in 31 AA low speed axle?

Dave, first the 30-31 low speed gearing is a 6.6 ratio for the bevel gear rear. I believe physically the BB 5.17 gearing will fit in the AA housing, but the pinion shaft has larger spline diameter and won't fit the AA driveshaft coupling. Like Bob said, changes would have to be done to the driveshaf...
