Cracked flywheel housing.

I'm in the process of dissasembling the engine in my 29 and tonight when I got the flywheel housing cleaned up I found a crack at two of the bolt holes on opposite sides of the housing. I've read that this seems to be a fairly common thing to see housings with these cracks. So how big a deal are the...

Re: Dang it was tough removing the nuts on piston rods.

I'll have to keep on the look out for one at auctions etc... Obviously I will be getting all new ones now. I would like to think that the replacements are a standard size from the parts suppliers.

Re: Dang it was tough removing the nuts on piston rods.

So it's a 21/32" nut. I went around several hardware stores, parts stores etc... looking for a socket to fit and no one had anything that would fit. Didn't make it across town to Sears to check. Probably would have saved me the challenge of it all. So in Les Andrews book he says to use a 19/32&...

Dang it was tough removing the nuts on piston rods.

Originally I was just going to pull the engine to get at my transmission because it was "growling" at me but now it has turned into a complete rebuild of the engine too. Seems that is the way things go sometimes. Found that all the shims on the rods have been removed over the years and the...

Re: 2nd gear is growling at me.

Just got back from a fellow AAer's place with two used transmissions that hopefully will have good gears that I can use to replace the one(s) that are making noise in mine. He was nice enough to let me have them and take what I need out of them and then settle up with him for the parts that I use. I...

Re: Your thoughts on pulling the engine

Well thanks for all the information and advice. I feel much better about using the spark plug holes now. I think that I'll make a bracket that will span between the plug holes so it will eliminate any side forces to the plug openings. I can see both sides of the open the engine up or not question. I...

Re: Your thoughts on pulling the engine

Yep sort of makes me pucker up too thinkin about all that weight on two plug holes. I was thinking about making my own. They are not terribly expensive @ 10 bucks each but I sort of hate to spend when I can have all the fun of making my own. Any others experiences?

Your thoughts on pulling the engine

Found a good used engine hoist on craigs list so getting the engine pulled to get at the transmission is not far around the corner now. Not planning to pull the head off the engine so I dont really want to loosen any of the nuts on the head studs in order to hook up the chains and risk causing a lea...

Good site with lots of helpful information.

I ran across this site on the Orange County Model A Ford Club site. It is a bunch of tech articles by Tom Endy. I am finding the information quite enlightening. http://www.ocmafc.org/Tom%20Endy%27s%20Technical%20Articles.htm Not sure if the link will work. If not just copy and paste it on to your ad...

Thanks Radar. I'll request a catalog from them too. Been asking for a lot of them since I got the truck in December.

Re: 2nd gear is growling at me.

I don't know if changing the oil weight would work on this or not. Being that I only have the noise while in second gear is starting to make me think that it might not be a bearing that is going bad but just that second gear is worn or chipped causing the noise as Gunmetal suggests. If it was a bear...

Re: Wood blocks under cab are bad.

I'm in no big rush on it. We just had a bout of the nastys in our house this last week too. Not fun! Just let me know when you get the chance.
Thanks,
Dave

Wood blocks under cab are bad.

I need to replace the wood blocks under my 1929 82-A cab to get the doors to line up right. The two rear blocks seem to be ok but one of the front ones is completely gone and the other one is just about gone too. I have lots of oak that I can cut some out of if anyone has the dimensions. If not what...

Re: 2nd gear is growling at me.

I figured I would have to pull the engine, not really looking forward to it. Don't really have to worry about scratching the paint, not much on the truck to scratch. Pulled the top off the trans to take a look but can't see the gears too good due to the oil in the trans. Pulled the plug tonight to d...

2nd gear is growling at me.

Got my 29 in the shop on jack stands with all the wheels off and I have been going over things just figuring out what is good and what's not. Has the three speed transmission with the high / low behind it. When I start it up and run through the gears 1st 3rd and reverse are nice and quiet but 2nd ha...
