Re: early 28 worm drive
According to the Indianapolis Service Letters, there seemed to be a lot of trouble with the worm drive thrust bearings. In October 5, 1928 letter it mentions the changeover from the TT style worm thrust bearing, retainer, and collar (part numbers TT-114 and TT-123) as used on the "TT" truc...

Re: Tires
Originally the '28 AA's came with 30X5 high pressure tires in the front and 32X6 high pressure tires on the rear. In July 1929 6.00X20 balloon tires became standard on the front, but 32X6 high pressure were still used on the rears. Beginning January 1930 6.00X20 balloon tires were used for dual rear...

Re: 4 speed in 1929 aa
On the Warner produced 4-speed the casting date on the case is on the drivers side a little bit behind the clutch/brake pedal shaft area. The top transmission cover has a date on the passenger side behind the hand brake mount area, viewed from the top. There is also a date stamped on the transmissio...

MARC MEET--JSC SEMINAR AT FLINT, MI
I just wanted to mention that one of the Judging Standards Committee Seminars at the MARC Membership Meeting to be held in Flint, Michigan April 7-10, 2016 is going to be on Area 22 (wheels, tires, and valve stems). Although it will include the information on the "A's", I have been ask to ...

Re: Front end caster
Have you checked the radius rod ball fit at the flywheel housing? Make sure the ball is round, fits tight in the cap, and that the cap is assembled correctly. If the ball is loose it can cause a front end problem. Also, I worked on a fellows truck that one of the rear spring center bolts were bent. ...

Re: Cast iron drums and other brake questions
The rule was to use woven lining on the steel drums and the molded lining on the cast drums, although the woven could be used on the cast drums also, but not visa versa. The molded lining sends the heat out to the drums, but the cast drums don't expand like a steel drum would. The woven lining usual...

Re: Part # or Plug?
It's not a big job to remove the six bolts that hold the coupling shaft outer cover to the back of the transmission, and then slide the cover back. The coupling shaft has a female cup with teeth on the inside. The transmission output shaft has a male gear on it that has teeth on the outside. These s...

Re: Part # or Plug?
I'd remove the bolts and slide the front coupling shaft cover back to inspect the coupling shaft to transmission output shaft gear connection (shown in your bottom picture). Often these get very worn out and can cause the backlash you feel. If it completely fails, it could leave you sitting along th...

Re: 4 speed Transmission counter shaft question
I'm looking at having a batch of these made, because I haven't been able to find any of these either. I'm waiting for the machine shop to get back to me with a price to see if the project is do-able. I forget what the Rockwell hardness the shaft has to be to withstand the use of needle bearings on i...

Re: New to the Forum
Some "BB" parts do interchange, but the majority of them do not. For instance, the internal transmissions gears are the same, but the case is different. The wheel bearings, brake shoes, front drum/hub assembly are the same, but the rear hub/drum assembly is different. The driveshaft, torqu...

Re: Indented Door for side mount
Yes, there were two different styles. The drivers door with the more rectangular shaped indent became available in Febreuary '31 for the Service Car, followed in March '31 for the Ice Wagon and then offered for the Heavy Duty Express. Dump, Coal, and Garbage bodies when tires larger than 6.00X20 wer...

Re: 31 delux wire wheels
Physically the '28 wire spoke wheels and the '29 disc wheel will fit on the '30-'31 hubs. The bolt pattern is the same. SAFETY WISE THIS SHOULD NOT BE DONE! The '28 and '29 wheels had a cone shaped protrusion around the back of each bolt hole that mated to a cone shaped recession in the hub. This he...

Re: Budd Wheels, Spoke Wheels, Hubs, Change Out...
Forgot to mention that the spindles were heavier starting in January 1930 and took larger wheel bearings than the two styles previously used in 1928 and 1929. The earlier hubs for the wire spoke wheels and the 6 hole '29 wheels won't fit the '30 and '31 heavier spindles.

Re: Budd Wheels, Spoke Wheels, Hubs, Change Out...
In January 1930 the new chassis with a heavier front axle, larger front brakes, bevel gear rear and Budd wheels were now used. These trucks continued to use the '29 sheetmetal until June 1930 when the new '30 sheetmetal for the commercials was introduced. Some of the odd features of these trucks dur...

Re: 29 bevel gear rear end
The 28-29 bevel gear rear axle was available in a 7.16:1 and a 5.11:1 ratio. These rears are unique in that the pinion was part of the driveshaft, not a separate gear. I have a high speed 5.11 rear end assembly that someone torched off the torque tube and driveshaft a few inches in front of the torq...
