yup. I was told the gap was put there to collect all the leaves and other junk that can get jamed in there. It gives you something to clean.

Yes. Mine has a slant toward the front. Looked at the spring this morning and it does not look healthy. Spring clamps rotted off as well. I found on eBay some springs that are 28" to 35.5". I am assuming that the larger spring would lift higher when installed. Am I correct in this? Anyway...

Go ahead with the bolts. You can always switch to rivets latter. Take the time to make yourself a drill guide to hold the drill bit on center of the rivets. It'll save time and broken bits.
