Re: Dumb(?) newbie question

If one is interested I have I beleve a '28 AA front axle that I do not need. Being I own a '30 Everything is intact tho the spindles were welded to the axle to turn it into a trailer. (It looks like the weld is rather sloppy and possible to knock off.) It has the not wide drums, but of the same diam...

Re: Results of my 30/31 rear end inspection for backlash

Oh Mbailout2, I am also curious as to what you are using as a lubricant. I had seen a lot of similar wear in out 'A' transmissions at my work. Where the gears were worn, and countershafts actually cut into by the roller bearings. I cant say it was 1 type of oil as for Years the owner swore by 80-90....

Re: Results of my 30/31 rear end inspection for backlash

Umm, I know we like to have everything in top shape, but why not run this as is untill it actually fails (Which could possibly be in another 100k Miles) These Henrys are Not precision insturments afterall. The wear on the carrier housing can be taken up with brass or steel as I believe they are eith...

Re: Mobil 638 oil

From work I got used to using the bucket pumps attatched to 5 gallon pails. They are not to pricy used (the one I bought used was in peices and $5) a couple of rivets, and wing bolts, and I had a good pump. We use these pumps at work for 80-90w 600w and 1000w. Even in the snow they will pump. Tho yo...

Re: speedo drive....

Found it! and I stand corrected. There is a calling for a thrust washer on the driven gear. Price list lists a quantity of 1 And found that there was also a 7.17-1! ratio rear end. Damn that thing must not go above 25 flat out! theres a 7.17 a 6.6 and a 5.14 Luckilly I have the high speed rear end! ...

Re: speedo drive....

Just make sure your driven gear matches the drive gear also.(Mine had a 5.14 driven by a 6. somthing) and the driven gear wasnt to happy. I also dont believe that the driven gear had any thrust washers behind it. THo I have yet to look up the parts list.... Goes and digs it out.

Re: Split-rim tools

Sorry about that Niel! I bought all 3 of my tire irons years ago, and the labels are long gone. Like Bob C. states. It is Ken tool :p
I have the simple lock ring tool, and they work great. Tho looking at the newer pricier ones look like they would work even better.

Re: rear drum puller

This is a simple and great idea! Thanks! I would certainly Not pull on the outside of the brake drum! This only will bend the drum and ruin it. Pulling thru the wheel studs centers the force on the strong hub and axle. I made one like the old K.R. Willson tool where it screws onto the hubcap threads...

Re: Split-rim tools

A 'Lock ring tool' is what you need to look for. And preferably 2 of them. Klien tools makes the best tire irons I have found. and they are reasonable too. I bought mine for 15$ each, and a Tire iron for 30$. Makes changing tires a breeze with the proper tools.

Re: Anyone using a shortened pitman arm?

I'm not willing to try that. As I had enough trouble steering my truck at low speed. I can only imagine how it would be with a shorter lever. And I do believe that the turning radius is fixed by the spindle lock nut that hits the axle as a stop. Tho I could be wrong. I can also seeing a shorter arm ...

Re: most often used tools for the AA

Hmm, I had to buld a toolbox to hold everything I took with us. A mechanical car jack with a 'U' shaped cup to pick up our pesky round axles. Jack bar. Budd nut wrench, Bar for wrench and a cheater big enough to still fit either under the seat or in the toolbox, ~ 3'. Railroad wrench/monkey wrench(N...

Re: trans.& under drive

One Must balance tires on these rigs. On dirt roads and 25 mph, I would not bother to do so, but on asphalt, and higher speeds I'd say its mandatory. When my truck was running I took my wheels to my highscool shop and spun balanced them there. I picked the truest wheels to mount tires on, and added ...

Re: Rear End Backlash

For the bevel gear axle there is a couple of things you can do to get the backlash proper. A quick way to set these is to remove the axles from the carrier along with the spider gears. Allot less weight helps. with berings dry fit and races in the housings, bolt up the 2 halves with the carrier in i...

Re: Question on split rims

I assume the 6 holes in the rim refer to the triangle shaped punchouts, and not the stud holes. On other notes, ford did not make the disk wheels as they were supplied by budd wheel co, and I assume that at a point or 2 others could have joined the production for factory suppliers, allong with the a...
