Re: hyatt roller bearings. do they run hot?
Check the Ford Service Bulletins. My den is being remodeled and my books are packed away so I can't give you the exact date they addressed the addition of a extra grease fitting in the torque tube. It gives the exact measurements of where to put it. I think it was sometime in '30 though. Later torqu...

Re: Dropping out of 4th
Make sure the spacing washer (part #7063) is on the front of the mainshaft too. Often these get forgotten or lost. The Model A three speed didn't use one of these so some rebuilders don't realize that one belongs there. Without this washer the mainshaft can move back and forth too much helping to di...

Re: Power Take Off
When you mount a PTO to any transmission you want to check the backlash between the PTO driven gear and the transmissions driving gear. The backlash should be .006 to .012 between the gears. Do not just use the gasket that comes with your gasket kit. PTO mounting gaskets come in several different th...

Re: 28/29 brake hub
Cast drums can be cut on a lathe, but steel drums like most original A and AA used were pressed steel. To true up a pressed steel drum they should be ground on a drum grinding machine. The machinist was right, it can take around four hours to do one. I found an old truck brake drum grinding machine ...

Re: BODY STYLE REFERENCES
The April 1, 1932 Ford Body Parts List shows several different dump body types. It also shows the different PTO's, hydraulic pumps and control levers. The Wood brand dumps were available in a light and heavy hydraulic versions. I have some original GarWood sales literature that I could make you copi...

Re: 1931 AA transmission has a BB-7222 tower ?
Somebody probably had the same problem you had with your original transmission tower with the worn out trunion pins. They simply put a BB tower on their '31 transmission. The shift rails and interlocks should be the same. One exception though in the early four speeds. A February 1930 Service Bulleti...

Re: AA Ford toe in
My 1931 Bear alignment book shows 1/32 toe in for 1928-29 AA's and 1/32 to 3/32 for the 1930-31's. The difference in these could be caused by the different caster specs. The caster for the 28-29 AA's is 1 degree and the 30-31 AA's is 3 1/2 degrees. The size of the rear tires could also make a differ...

Re: 28/29 bevel gear high speed value
One bad feature of these early style bevel gear rears is that the pinion shaft and gear is made as part of the drive shaft assembly. They did not use the splined coupling to attach the pinion shaft to the driveshaft. The torque tube is a different length also.

Re: 29 rear spring mount
First off, you will find that the rivets and rivet holes in the frame are not standard bolt hole sizes. The holes are larger that when the hot rivets are installed and squashed in place they conform to the hole size. If your going to use bolts you should ream the holes out to the next larger size so...

Re: 28 AA front axle
Ford sent out a Service Letter to their dealers and told them to check all AA trucks delivered before February 15th, 1929 to see if they were assembled with the Model A spindles and wheel bearings, and AA hub/drum assemblies that used these bearings. Originally the AA trucks also used the A axle and...

Re: HERSHEY show details
Kevin, just thought of something else that might save you money if you want to sleep in your truck. There is a Rest Area on I- 81 just south of the Rt 743 exit (the first Hershey exit) and at the next exit, Rt 39 (the second Hershey exit) there is at least two truck stops and a Perkins restaurant. B...

You're right Kevin, Hershey is the ONE. I haven't gone to Carlisle in quite a few years because there never seemed to be much old stuff there anymore. I don't think you can park overnight in the paid spectator parking lots. They have special lots for overnight parking for campers and such. I don't k...

No, the Canadian Timken rear is completely different than the '30-'31 "AA" Timken used in the trucks in the US.

Re: differential gear ratio
The lower triangle in the picture (although upside down to read the letters in it) is the Timken trademark. The big "T" down the middle is for Timken, the "D" and "A" on either side of it is for Detroit Axles, and the "CO" beneath it is for Company. Can tell w...
