That's actually a spark arrestor and it screws in. Chances are your float is probably not bouyant anymore and is sinking. They are pretty easy to change. Just make sure you drain the gas low enough . It comes out the front. There is a tool you need to unscrew it.

In my service bulletin there are references to some AA tings like rear springs and how to mount a dump box. I don't think that there was a separate book for the big trucks as they shared a lot of parts with the cars.
