Alan,
The gear set can be changed in the rear axle. You would have to fine the higher speed gears or a complete rear axle.

Alan,
At 2200 engine RPM, 6.00x20 tires, and 6.6:1 axle gears, the speed is 30.5 mph. With a Warford overdrive the speed is 40.8 mph.

With 5.14:1 axle gears, the speed is 39.2 or 52.4 (with Warford overdrive).

2200 engine RPM is a good engine speed for a stock engine.

Richard, The TT express body appears the same as the AA express body at first glance. The TT express body seems to be much more available than the AA express body. So, many times the TT body is sold/bought as an AA body. The TT and AA express tail gates are the same except for the location of the tw...

I borrowed a bucking bar made for an A from a friend to install an AA front cross member. It didn't work great. It was about a 1" rod with a couple of bends with a cupped hole in the end. All of the rivets were held from the inside of the frame and the new head formed on the outside. It took tw...

Sam,
I think that Bert's Model A Center in Denver has these d-nuts (800-321-1931).

Mike,
All '30/'31 AA brake drums are the same (front and rear). The cast iron drums are an aftermarket and will work on any '30/'31 AA. I think that the cast iron dissipate the heat better than steel. And, some shops do not know the correct procedure to turn steel drums (slow is good).

30/31 Rear Axle Gear Ratios

If the rear axle is still assembled then the following procedure can be used to determine the ratio. Turn a rear wheel (with the other held stationary) for one turn and count the number of times the drive shaft or engine turns over. If you are counting engine turns, then make sure the transmission i...

Dave, There is a grease retainer in the hub which is held by a snap ring. Once the snap ring is removed, I drop the hub (square) onto a piece of plywood on a concrete floor to remove the grease seal. The weight of the roller bearing usually forces the seal out of the hub. I hold the hub about 3' abo...

Yes, most shops will not work on split rim wheels. My process for mounting a new tire is about the same. I make sure that the slot for the removable flange is completly free of any rust built up (in addition to the removable flange. After about 20 lbs. of pressure in the new tube, I turn the wheel o...

Dave, Since your hubs will turn, neither the roller bearing or the brake linings (service or emergency) are holding the hub. The tapers of the axle shaft and hub are what holds the hub onto the axle shaft. I would guess that they can not be welded together. I don't know how this could be accomplishe...

Rear Hub

Dave,
The rear hub includes a roller bearing which ride on the axle housing race (the greased portion of the axle housing in the picture. The rear hub is then tapered to fit the tapered axle shaft. So, the hub is supported by the roller bearings. This is the same design as the A rear axle.

Dave,
Below are pictures of the inside of the backing plate, emergency carrier plate and axle shaft (left/top view). I don't have an axle with the service and emergency brakes still attached. I hope this helps.
