Re: front brake springs
NO the A and AA brake return springs are NOT the same.
Both Bratton's and Ford have different part numbers for those springs, and the original Ford parts manual also has a different price.
Model A used A-2035 & A-2036.
AA used AA-2035 & AA-2036-B.

Re: front brake springs
For 1928 and 1929, the front brakes used all A chassis parts (including the retracting springs A-2035/36). The rear brakes used AA retracting springs for all years. The 1930-1931 AA's used AA retracting springs.ModelAkid wrote:NO the A and AA brake return springs are NOT the same.

Re: front brake springs
Neil, why does the 1931 A & AA Ford parts manual show on p. 61 that all AA's used the same AA springs from 28 to '31?

Re: front brake springs
If the October 1, 1928 booklet is used, then the "No. Req. per Car" shows "2" for the long AA-2035 spring and "4" for the short AA-2036 spring. So, that covers the rear brakes only as shown in the attached picture of a 2/28 AA rear brake setup. With that information plus actually seeing the brake parts for the 1928-1929 AA's, confirms that the balance of the springs were A chassis parts.ModelAkid wrote:Neil, why does the 1931 A & AA Ford parts manual show on p. 61 that all AA's used the same AA springs from 28 to '31?
You are likely referencing the July 1, 1931 booklet. I can only guess at the answer. Note that in this booklet, AA-2035 is changed and listed as the "short" spring and AA-2036-B is changed and listed as the "long" spring. These springs are shown in the second attached picture. The "No. Req. per Car" shows "4" for the short and "8" for the long and this seems to be incorrect as the spring count should be "4" and "4" for 1930-1931 AA's only.
Basically, one should only use a parts booklet which is close to the AA being worked on. Using later booklets muddies the water many times. And, what is in the booklets must be verified as these booklets are not always correct. Sometime, it is like working with a can of worms to figure out the correct parts.

Snyder's and Bratton's show AA 28-31 14" brakes.

Re: front brake springs
I know the later editions of factory parts manuals can be confusing regarding parts for earlier models, especially when they are substituting parts. I am surprised the 7/31/1931 factory parts manual has an error on those springs. I guess it's not the "parts bible" I thought it was.
Thanks for clearing that up, Neil.
