Where has this forum been? 1931 Ford AA Wrecker
Hello Everyone:
I just stumbled across this forum the other day. I know about The Ford Barn and The Hamb and so on but never found this one. This is great!!
I have a 29 Model A Steelback that my family thoroughly enjoys! A few months ago we purchased a 1931 Wrecker that my 6yr old boy is pumped to start working on. A few questions I've had and ideas I would like to see and what a better place to be.
My full intention is to leave this truck in it's everyday clothes and drive and enjoy it.
Tires - the front tires are good but the rear tires need to be replaced. Any thoughts about where to buy, brand, style? Size of tires are 32x6 10ply. I seen Coker has a good looking tire (6.00-20)
Box - I would like to remove the wood with the lettering (it is not growing on me, maybe it will with time) and build a box for it. I work at a manufacturing facility with engineers, plasma tables, press brakes and the tools at my disposal . I would like to see pictures or ideas of what style box was typically used when they outfitted the truck with a crane.
Towing Tools - Excuse my ignorance but what was used to tow vehicles with these? There would need to be something solid vs just hooking on to the vehicle and letting it swing back and forth. What type of apparatus is attached to the vehicle that you lift on with the crane? Where does the apparatus pivot when you turn? Pictures would be greatly appreciated! If anyone has a snatch block and handle to sell I would be interested. I do know a guy who has a handle and is willing to cast me a new one.
Thanks!

They most likely used an Auto Ambulance when towing a car. see he link http://www.castleequipment.com/Museum/a ... istory.htm

Thanks Bob, I have seen the Ambulance and would love to get my hands on one! I will build something to make it work. I would also like to see what other people are using on their tow trucks that have worked well for them. We have a few local cruise nights and I would like to have a fake break down. Throw my wife and some kids in the car and have them "stranded" on Main Street with fake smoke coming out from under the hood and along comes the tow truck to the rescue! People love the old car! Don't get me wrong I enjoy the muscle cars (would love to have one some day) but the faces sure light up and the hands go up in the air when we putter into town and blow the ole Ahooga horn

Like to see more pictures of the AA wrecker, please. Glade you found it.

I was hoping to pull it home this weekend but that didn't happen. The weather was nice and my boy wanted to go play in the snow. I will post more pictures once I get it tucked into my garage.

Saw your old post, how is the truck coming?
Re: Where has this forum been? 1931 Ford AA Wrecker
Well it is coming along very poorly. I was working on a gentleman's 1930 Model A which ended up needing more than I anticipated, new electrical, replace the front frame crossmember, and a valve job. So naturally the tow truck didn't get much attention, I have the motor apart right now and going through it. Now the weather is getting nice and I don't spend as much time in the garage. We'll get there all in due time!

That is a fantastic find. I would love to get a tow truck complete with all the attachments to go with my 30 pick up
