On the engine and transmission cast parts were engine green. Stamped metal parts are black.

Chris,
It would be my guess that the dual high was painted black (just a guess). The u-joint housings were black. But I don't know where one would find out for sure.

I'm pretty sure mine was black before I painted it, although rust brown was also my dominant color!

I have just disassembled my dual high (Design 2) and found the rear hexagonal case was painted Ford engine green before being machined. Please see the attached pictures showing the inside of the rear case. Hopefully you can distinguish the engine green color inside the case, and more importantly that the paint was obviously there before the case was machined, as all the machined areas have no paint. The outside of my dual high was also engine green, but I believe finding the paint inside the case confirms the original color...Ford Engine Green.

I checked six dual-high trans I have, one in a 20,000 mile original truck, and the only color I found on any of them was black. I can't believe any manufacturer would paint the inside of a gear case knowing the paint could possibly loosen and go through the bearings and such. My guess the paint was probably inside from an over-zealous restorer with a spray gun.

my guess would be black as well. Werent they made by Detroid Gear and Machine co? cant imagine ford sending them paint to paint them green when any old black will do.

You don't imagine that if Henry Ford wanted thousands of units that they would paint it any color he asked?

Well, mine is now a very fresh coat of engine green. As you all know, there were 3 dual high designs. Mine is design 2, with the hexagonal case, which was only in production from March '28 to mid '28 according to RGJS. Designs 1 and 3 seem very similar, with the round case. Maybe design 2 was made by a different supplier? Or maybe even by the standard transmission supplier, whoever that was. (They certainly would have had lots of green paint :D )

Anyway, for those who've said color was black, which design version do you have (or round or hexagonal case)? From what I can tell, I'm guessing both KVO and Stakebed are design 3.

Also, I'm guessing the dual high was assembled into the frame right before the engine, since it's front support is the u-joint housing on the back of the transmission, so unlikely to have been painted black on the line.

We may never fully get to the bottom of this, but we can have fun trying 8)
