Cast Iron drum and hub is one piece. Drawn steel drums are a drum with a seperate hub.

Chris, That rule is general, but there are always exceptions. The cast iron drums used on the 30/31 are not always cast with the hub and drum. MVC-009E.JPG is an exception to the one piece general rule.

I have never seen a cast iron drum with a seperate hub. Were these genuine Ford?

Chris, I have to believe that Ford, as well as other brake drum manufacturers made the cast iron drums without the hubs. The NOS cast iron drum without the hub is from a Ford dealer. That does not necessarily mean that is was manufactured by Ford Motor Company. Ford used a number of suppliers to fill parts orders.

All of my NOS AA drums are from Ford dealers. Once the bonded shoes became available after AA production, for the 32-34 BB, the cast iron drums would have been available. The BB shoes use the same width and length brake shoe material as the AA, but are still found in woven and bonded out of old Ford dealer's parts departments.

The BB shoes will not work on the AA, as the anchor and pivot points are different, but the brake linings are interchangeable. The NOS cast iron drum has a manufacture date of 1944, so Ford was making replacement drums for the AA/BB well after the AA went out of production.

The big green Ford parts book shows that 28/29 11" front hub & drum is AA1102-A (R) and AA1103-A (L)
The book shows the 1928/1929 rear hub and drum as AA1114-A (R) and AA1113-A (L)

For 1930, the Green parts book shows for front 14" brakes, the hub and drum BB-1102-A (R) and BB-1103-A (L)
The rear 14" brakes for 1930 & 1931 shows AA-1113-F3 (R) and AA-1114-F3 (L) which were no longer available as of the printing of the Green FOrd Book in November 1950.

It also shows that for the 14" front brakes for 1931, AA-1103-E (L) and AA-1102-E (R)

The Green Ford parts book also shows that the 14" front drum and hub BB-1102-A & BB-1103-A were made for use on 1930-1934 AA & BB trucks without full floating rear axle. Why would there be any differentiation of front and rear drums for full floating rear axles unless the same drum could be used on the front with a change of the hub.

All of the drums in the Green Ford parts book came with the hub, however they were steel drums with separate hubs during AA production, but there is no mention in any footnote about cast iron drums with hubs after AA production.

There is also no mention of the steel 14" drums available as a separate part minus the hub, but they were available.

There has been known for many years the omission of information in the Green Ford parts book, and this is one area of that example.

Eric,
The parts book show BB-2019 Shoe (brake) and lining assembly 1928-34.

eric your photos are confusing and i think mislabeled as the ones that you have listed as steel sure look like cast iron . it is my understanding that the steel ones have flat sides and tops whereas the cast iron are dome shapes like you show in you last pictures but you have labeled as steel which i believe is incorrect. here are pics of my front and rear drums from my early 31 AA .

Eric's photos labeled MVC-008E and MVC-009E are definitely cast iron drums. Steel drums did not have the protruding tab seen on the rim of the drum in those 2 phots.

But will the BB drums work on a 1930AA with 14" drums?

Rollingsculpture, There are cast iron and steel drums for 30/31. The photos are not mislabled.

Bob C, You found one of the mistakes in the parts book. The BB-2019 shoes will not work on the 28/29 AA front, but should work on the rear. The 28 AA had no emergency brakes, but the shoes were 14", so the rear brake shoes should work for all years 28-31 as well through 1934 BB with the 14" brakes.

The parts book should have had a footnote for part BB-2019.

Chris, Do the drums you need have the small lug pattern for the wire spoke wheels, although the drums are for 14" shoes?
