157 " and 131 " muffler clamp drawings

Post by rollingsculpture »

well... i finally got the second drawing done for the muffler clamps. The clamps i used were made available from a friend. one may be a repro , it is part AA 5259 if i got it right from Neil its not in the service bulletins, the other clamp is the part AA5256 -C this part seems to be original but welded at the point where the flat part connects to the frame having two holes to hold it , looking with a magnifyng glass at the service bulletin drawings i see part AA-5626- C is also for the 131" closed cab with long tail-pipe. it is the one mounted to the frame in front , hmmm so if you need a clamp for your 131 " closed cab with long tail-pipe , use the pattern here for the part AA- 5626-C as for part A-5626 -C a regular model A muff clamp which mounts to the frame adapter part AA 5257-B with the bolt that also clamps the bracket around the muffler/ it is used for the rear clamp on the long tail pipe and is the only clamp for the a short tail pipe. Last bit of info is that the part AA5259-B is similar to part AA-5258 used for the 157" open body with short tail pipe with the difference being part AA5259-B is a little longer in length before it makes the angle for the flat mounting section to the frame. i will post photos when i get a chance of the fabricated ones in the shop. until than here are the drawings , i hope they help. Changes made here from previous post on the drawings. as for the illustrations i did not change those are as labeled in the book and have been left to read the same.

The Ford Service Bulletin page 558 contains some errors (at least three)!

Muffler outlet pipe bracket AA-5256-D is the correct part number for the front bracket on the AA131 with an AA-5253 78” long pipe. But, according to the Ford archive engineering drawing, the bulletin picture is not showing the correct bracket. The correct bracket is actually shown (also incorrectly) above as bracket AA-5256-C for the AA157 with open body. If the two pictures are reversed, then the pictures would match the part numbers. Also, switching the pictures makes since because the AA157 frame is deeper than the AA131 frame and should therefore have the shorter bracket.

Once the pictures are reversed, then the front muffler clamp pictures for both the closed and open bodied AA157 are the same (and correct).

The third mistake in the bulletin is regarding the AA157 open bodies with short tail pipe (AA-5255-B 50” long pipe). The drawing incorrectly has the same picture for both the front and rear tail pipe brackets. The front bracket is AA-5256-C but the rear bracket is AA-5259-B. I don’t yet have the engineering drawing for this AA-5259-B rear bracket. But, I am thinking that it is the bracket which I sent you (time will tell).

Also note that the part number for muffler bracket which mounts to the frame adapter is A-5256-C (not AA-5256-C). The A-5256-C part is an “A” part and is sold by most vendors.

Neil , did i post the wrong part numbers on the bracket illustrations from the bulletins ,if so from left to right what should they be numbered as . i see there is a part
A-5652-C and a part AA 5256-C which looks like the part 5256-D that we are working with.

also the engineer drawing you posted seems to have the longer flat strap part that is shown on the illustration for the AA 5259_B bracket used for the 157 wb with the short tail pipe the distance from the clamp portion is pretty long

Mike,
The drawings of the brackets on page 558 of the service bulletins are partially incorrect. So, these drawings can not be used to identify the various parts.

I have only one engineering drawing at this time (posted above). It is for part AA-5256-D and is for the AA131 with closed bodies as specified on the engineering drawing. This is also confirmed by the Ford Parts Price list (dated 7-1-31). Consequently, the bracket shown on page 558 for the AA131 with closed bodies is wrong.

The first drawing you made (and identified as AA-5256-D) is actually AA-5256-C which is for the front bracket of all AA157's (either closed or open bodies). The drawing for bracket AA-5256-C on page 558 for the AA157 open bodies is wrong.

I don't yet have the engineering drawing for the second bracket used with open bodies on the AA157. This bracket is numbered AA-5259 on page 558 and also in the Ford Parts Price List. There is not a drawing of this bracket on page 558. I believe that the second bracket which I sent you is AA-5259. However, your drawing indicates this is a reproduction bracket. The only way to know for sure is to get the engineering drawing for AA-5259.

I noticed that the part # on the clamp bolt that holds the pipe tight in the A5256 C bracket was changed in March 1930 to use the model A bracket on the AAs. Page 442 in the Ford service bulletin will explain this! Shelby, Louisiana.

Neil ,aha i will update my drawings accordingly for part numbers and repost in the morning , as for the label repro i thought it would be better to do so unless confirmed . also that part AA5256-c that you sent was 1 and 1/4 inch wide and the other one AA5259 is only 1 inch wide which i thought odd since it was smaller . also as i noted in part AA 5258 in the bulletin the mounting face is bent the other direction , i see now that, that one is most likely shorter than the one you sent me as well. back to the drawing board.

I have to ask about the routing of the tailpipe on the 157 parallel chassis with the rear spare tire carrier. Are there any illustrations for the chassis that use the rear under chassis spare tire carrrier?

Rollingsculpture and Neil, Thanks for the measurements, I know this will help others on their projects. Nice bracket you made. I'm still trying to figure the difference in bracket A-5256-C and bracket AA-5256-C. Is the AA-5256-C made of 1 1/4" X 1/8" flat. Does anyone have this bracket that is 1 1/4" wide? This would help others to know. I've noticed different size bolts in these brackets, this could be also a difference. I fill the same way about these brackets. Robert placed this post back in Oct. 2008. I brought it out to help him. Finally got some results to help him and others. If he needs more, I would make him a set also! Shelby, Louisiana.

Hello Shelby,
A-5256-C Muffler Tail Pipe Bracket – sold by most vendors:

• Starting March 1929 - used on the A per Ford Service Bulletin – page 327
• Starting March 1930 - used on the AA 131-1/2 with frame adapter AA-5257 per Ford Service Bulletin – page 442
• Starting April 1931 - used on the AA 131-1/2 with separate long tail pipe for closed bodies as the second bracket per Ford Service Bulletin – page 558
• Starting April 1931 – used on the AA 157 with separate long tail pipe for closed bodies as the third bracket per Ford Service Bulletin – page 558

AA-5256-C Muffler Tail Pipe Bracket – not being reproduced:

Starting with the beginning of production (mid 1930) for all AA 157 chassis – used as the #1 bracket to clamp the tail pipe to the muffler and also hold it to the frame. It is 1-1/4” wide and 1/8” thick strap metal. There is one clamping bolt (3/8-24 x 1 hex head) and two bracket to frame bolts (5/16-24 x 25/32 hex head bolt).

Mike’s drawing and above picture shows this AA-5256-C bracket. Note that all AA157 chassis used a separate muffler tail pipe (different lengths for open or closed cargo bodies)
