Does anyone have any info or pics about converting an AA to hydraulic brakes? What parts work?

When you find out let me know...
I'm determined, but its not on the top of my "to do" list

I have found a few sites that say dodge motor homes had the 5 x 8 lug bolt pattern. Thats basically as far as I got, I found that info before I bought my chassis and realized I have a lot of work to do before thinking about brakes.

I did hear that the 5 slot AA Budd wheels fit Dodge trucks. In fact, I bought a set of six from a guy who posted them on Craigslist in the SF Bay Area for $100 bucks.

Of course I was in the truck and on the way before he finished talking.

The catch was that he couldn't get the lug nuts loose. I took over the Napa original AA Lug socket that a member of this forum sent me for free, and a 6 foot cheater bar.

We got them off, cut off the tires, and loaded them up.

They had been mounted on Dodge running gear from an old Dodge truck he had cut up to send to scrap but he wasn't going to scrap the wheels.

I got a gift from above on that one, hey, they were almost flawless!

PS; on the juice brakes, ditto what scl009 said!

This add on fordbarn got me thinking.

"Parts for Sale: AA bellhousing $200, AA 4spd trans. $100, front axle with hydralics $200, rear end with hydralics $200. Motor w/head and pan off $100. right hand drive parts(bellhousing, steering column, accelerator linkage)$125

I sent him an email asking about what he meant by hydralics.
Anybody have any guesses.

My guess is that he couldn't spell hydraulics. :D
I called him and the brakes he has are not for a AA. He is parting out a doodlebug with later model axles in it.

I'd like to find out what year Dodge truck wheels fit the AA, and what tire size they have. Thanks, FB

I have one wheel dated 1937 , looks the same at first glance but looking close at it you will see that the center is a little different shape causing the wheel to set closer to the center of the truck by 1 1/4 inches , a pair in front would give you a 2 1/2 inch narrower track.

This is only for the 28/29 right, because they were like the cars right?

Would those plates work for a 31?

Sorry to bump the post up but enough people seem to be interested in this topic

Ford built F&M 500 series trucks all the way to 1969 with 5 lug wheels, but they are not what you normally see!

Do you have your hands on both of the backing plates? Some dimensions and/or pics would be great.

I found this post on "yesterday's truck" referring to 48-52 F5s.

"The last time I talked to the guy at JobLot he said they have a complete brake kit, minus shoes and lines, including all four wheel cylinders, three hoses and master cylinder, new for $250. YOu will have to find a place that will reline your shoes and you can find the brake line at any auto parts store." November 10, 2006

I couldn't find the kit in the joblot catalog

I also emailed Chucks Trucks and this was the advice he gave me (very quickly and legibly I might add!)
"Scott,
I would think the most appropriate thing to start with would be a '39 1 1/2 ton. It was the last year for torque tube drive, and the first year for hydraulic brakes. I don't have one, but I'm sure you can find one somewhere. When you find it, I can provide shoes, cylinders, and seals.
Chuck"
I don't really understand why I would need drums/backing plates from a truck with a torque tube though?

If anyone is near New Jersey, I found this craigslist posting http://newjersey.craigslist.org/pts/1680427334.html
Maybe if someone is close enough and the guy is nicce enough, someone could go take a look with a good measuring tape.
