overdrives
Has anyone put an overdrive in their AA truck?
I found a listing online for "Ryan Overdrive Inc. in Dacono, Colorado".
anyone ever use their overdrives?
Does Mitchell make one for the AA like they do for the A?
If I want to drive the truck I need to keep up with the traffic these days.

Re: overdrives
Just a thought but I have wondered if anyone has looked at useing the dual high as an overdrive? Could it be done I have not looked at it but it might be something to look at just a thought?

Re: overdrives
The "Dual High" is actually a 1-1 ratio in "HIGH" and a lower ratio in Low. Its really a reduction gear set-up for pulling stumps?bdotson wrote:Just a thought but I have wondered if anyone has looked at using the dual high as an overdrive? Correct me if I am mistaken, its possible I am (It could happen, thanks Jon Lovitz-SNL).
I recently bought one on eBay, but haven't taken it apart yet...

Re: overdrives
I have heard rumors of dual high units being installed in the reverse direction to make it an overdrive. I have never seen it done.

Re: overdrives
Chris, I'm not sure that could work? If the direct drive, 1 to 1, is the best that the transmission could do, then talk me through how the reverse direction could make the ratio higher...Chris Haynes wrote:I have heard rumors of dual high units being installed in the reverse direction to make it an overdrive. I'm not the best at figuring, I would have to hear it explained, or see it in action.

Re: overdrives
I have also heard something about using a dual high to make an "overdrive" but I have yet to see one too. Take a rear end that is 3.55 to 1. The drive shaft rotates 3.55 times for the axle to rotate once, correct? Now if you rotate the axle instead of the drive shaft, the axle would make 1 revolution while the drive shaft made 3.55. Hope this clears things up for you.

Re: overdrives
Your are right it is 1:1 in high so if you put er in backwards 1:1 would be your low and low would be you high. Am I right that there is a 47% under drive. If so you would have a 47% overdrive I dont think my truck would stand that. That would net a 3.40 rear ratio with a tall tire must run 65 or 70 mph. Still like to know if you can do it.

Re: overdrives
Makes sense guys, thanks for the explanation, I guess the only thing would be how much power would be needed to turn that final ratio, of course you could run in 3rd gear instead of 4th.
Someone with a brain will have to do the calcs...not me!

Re: overdrives
How many late model rear ends have a Ford enclosed drive line? I do know a guy with an AA that has a small block Ford V8, automatic tranny that installed a later rear end in it. It is a simple process to re drill the axle flange to the AA bolt pattern.

would it be possible to convert to open drive from the dual highChris Haynes wrote:How many late model rear ends have a Ford enclosed drive line? Re: overdrives
To a late rear axle you could convert any drive-line, but the enclosed one would need to stay closed because of how it seals in lubricant and out moisture?bdotson wrote:would it be possible to convert to open drive from the dual highChris Haynes wrote:How many late model rear ends have a Ford enclosed drive line?
