My AA truck did not have a muffler or tail pipe on it so I don't know what is required. I am assuming the muffler is the same as the passenger cars, but what about the tail pipe?
My truck is a 1931 with an 82-B cab, 157" wheel base, parallel frame type with the 185-B platform. It has 2 tail pipe supports (clamps) on the frame that appear to be original.
Can someone tell me if any suppliers have the correct tail pipe or are there any drawings available to have one made?
Thanks, Larry

Re: Tail Pipe
The only one I know who has correct mufflers for a AA is Aries Muffler.

Re: Tail Pipe
Hello Larry,
I don't know anybody making the correct tailpipes for the long-wheelbase AA's. There are pictures of the different AA exhaust systems in the April 1931 Service Bulletins and in the AA section of the Judging Standards. Three of the four chassis shown have a AA-5230 muffler instead of the regular A-5230 Model A muffler. I don't know what the difference was except the tailpipe coming out of the muffler. Hope this helps a little.

Re: Tail Pipe
Hello lfg1931,
Note that the April '31 Service Bulletin contains a number of mistakes (also copied into the Judging Standards). One will get fairly confused using this page!
The A muffler assembly (A-5230) includes the input and output pipes all welded together as a unit.
The AA muffler (AA-5230) does not have a tail pipe (just a stub for attaching a tail pipe with bracket, clamp AA-5256-C). The AA muffler started production in mid 1930 for use on the AA157 chassis.
Your '31 AA157 with an open body (i.e. 158-B) would have used the AA-5230 muffler. It should also use the AA-5255-B tail pipe which is 50" long. I think both are sold by Aries. There should be two tail pipe clamps for this setup (#1 bracket is AA-5256-C and AA-5259-B is the #2 bracket). These are not be reproduced as far as I know.
Page 558 of the Service Bulletins and figure 1158 shows the AA-5259-B bracket for the #2 bracket but incorrectly shows it also for the #1 bracket. Figure 1157 shows the #1 bracket (AA-5256-C) correctly.
Attached are pictures of these two brackets.

Re: Tail Pipe
Neil, thanks for the pictures and information. That is a great help. I have two brackets attached to the frame and I will be able to check them out tomorrow. I will call Aires directly to see what they can furnish.
Thanks again to all.

Re: Tail Pipe
My tailpipe clamps are exactly the same as the pictures furnished by Neil. I have checked with Aires and he can furnish the muffler with the original type short stub coming out but he does not produce the 50" long tailpipe. He says he does, however, have a drawing of this tailpipe and is going to get me a copy so I can have one fabricated.
