Tie rod rebuilding

I have my tie rod end rebuilding kits in hand, but am puzzled as how to install them. The ends of the tie rods almost touch the backing plates, preventing unscrewing the ends. What is the correct procedure for rebuilding the tie rods? Do you unscrew the whole tie rod, and swing the loose ends around to get to them, or do you have to take the whole wheel/brakes/backing plate off both sides?

msandefur,
If you do not want to remove the backing plates, I would suggest that you remove the spindle arms. There is one nut holding each arm. You will need to disconnect the drag link. Once these nuts are removed, I use a heavey rod (like 3/4" diameter) and hammer and tap the tapered ends of the threaded end to drive them out. And, maybe the balls on the arms will need restoration anyway.

I don't recommend unscrewing the rod as it will be almost impossible to get it started back on.
