1930 AA Swamp Buggy
1930 AA Swamp Buggy
This swamp buggy was originally built in the late 50's by a friend of mine, it was built from a 1930 AA 1 1/2 ton truck. He used the AA truck frame, front axle, model a engine with 4 spd, a non model A u joint and another 4 spd ford trany, then a non model A u joint and the rear end. The rear end was a bevel gear type housing. He took the ring and pinion out and replaced them with later model open drive shaft type so the pinion shaft is tapered with a key way and a nut that holds the yoke on. There were no springs on the rear end, it was bolted to the frame.
I drove this buggy many times in the everglades west of Miami from about 1965 to 1975, it was fun. It had 20" airplane tires with chains on the rear. This buggy sat and deteriorated for more than 20 years. In 2004 the owner asked me if I wanted the buggy and I said yes.
I was told the motor had a knock so I completely rebuilt another model A engine that had good babitt in the rods and mains. I replaced the AA frame with 5" channel. I flipped the front axle over to have more clearence and heated it up between the spring perch and the king pin to put the camber back into it. I put the motor up and over the front axle. In the back between the second trany and the rear end where there was only one u joint I put in an 36" open drive shaft. The tires on the front are 14.9 x 24. All 4 rims are called blanks, I welded in the AA centers. The rear has 18.4 x 30 tractor tires. I made the cowling in the front and I made a 30 gal. gas tank. In 2004 my son and I took the buggy back to the everglades to go hunting and went through water and mud 3' deep, we never got stuck, it was fun.
