31AA rear hub

Post by Shorthaul »

I'M in the process of removing the rear hubs and am in need of info on removing the large 1 3/4" nut.

Right or left hand threads.-------------or both.

Also, how tight is the nut,how much torque?

Thanks for any and all feedback.

As far as I know they are both right hand threads, I've always torqued them about as tight as I can then back them off enough to get the cotter pin through the nut/axle but don't just take my advise

I believe all axle nuts are right hand. Any references I have found on the AA rear axle nuts have said "securely tighten", then after service for approximately 100 miles, tighten again.
The torque on the Model A axle nuts is 125 ft/lbs.

I removed the nuts....right hand thread.

Next is getting the hub off the axle, I tried a three prong med. sized gear puller and no luck. The puller has a fairly coarse thread so probably not the best for the job. Thinking of applying heat --(oxygen tank empty, what else is new)-- to area right behind the nut as the wheel appears free from other obstructions , spins fairly well and doesn't seem to be hung up on the brakes.

Thanks for any suggestions.

If the truck is running loosen the nuts a couple turns then drive around the block a couple times to let the hubs pop off the axle taper.

I don't have a clue, does the rear axle have a taper along with a woodruff key where the hub mounts?

The axle does have a taper with a keyway. It's a square key like the "a". Technically not a woodruff key.

I'm guessing you did adjust the brakes so their is no pressure on the drums?

Chris, -----------Wish I could take your advice, but, the rear end is out of the truck and up on blocks.

Red, -----------I stand corrected about the square key.

Mark,----------Yeah, the brakes are disconnected and seem to be free.

AAholic,-------The cotter pin hole seemed to line up with the nut tight, it came loose with a large cresent wrench.

Hub is still stuck on axle, without any heat I think I will bolt a long bar across a couple of the lug bolts and along with the gear puller attached, warp it with a large hammer.
