Installing tubes in AA tires

Post by Bob from Northport »

We are preparing to install new tires, tubes and liners on the front of the fire engine. Do the bent valve stems point inward or outward on the wheels?? It seems outward would be easier to reach.

Thanks!!

The stems point out, so on duallys the outer rear wheel stem points in, Hence the dual sided filler tip.

Be very cautious of filling split rims with air. You may already know about the dangers, but if you don't say so and we will fill you in... There are specific things you need to do to be safe. Sry if you already know...

I put mine to the inside for safety sake. Also when I aired them up I wrapped three nylon ratchet type slings around them to keep them together. Be careful.

The '28/'29 AA's originally had straight stems. The attached shows the Schrader hardware. The '30/'31 AA's originally had a double bent stems. The stems point toward the wheel center but upwards.

I use the same type of air nozzle to fill tires. One change that I made was to remove the short rubber hose and replace it with a 10' hose. On the end of the hose, I attached a filler nozzle that clamps to the valve stem. That way if the tire blows I am a few feet away rather than having my face at the tire.
