Rear end

Post by Roadster AA »

In a trade, I just picked up a worm gear rearend for an AA. It has a hump on the left side looking from the back. Can someone tell me what it is? I hope it's a high gear.
Hope these pictures help.
Thanks,
Pat

The hump was added to the housing in early '29 (I think). Why? - I don't know. Maybe for better lubrication.

There's a gutter on the inside of that hump angled towards the bearing at the end of the worm to supply oil to this bearing. I've never seen any documentation about this, but I suggest its function from viewing it.
