Post by redlucky54 »

Hi I am new to the resroration program. I have a 31 AA stake bed truck that I am working on and having trouble removing the rear brake drums, have had a puller with no luck, drum does not move at all, also the brake pads are lose because with the puller on I can still turn drum. any advice would be helpful.

Rear Brake Drums

Post by Bradshaw »

Redlucky,

Welcome to Model AA Fords!

I had the same trouble you are having. I'm not sure what kind of puller you have, but I had to fabricate a puller. It has 3 "legs", each with a foot that goes over one stud followed by the factory lug nut. Then I used a large pipe wrench to turn the fine threaded grade 8 main bolt to pull up some pressure.

It still required me to heat one side of the hub with a torch and I had to use a sledge hammer on the end of the "puller" to get the drum to break loose.

Only one wheel was this tight, the remaining hubs came off really easliy.

Keep trying, you'll get it,

I have heated rear drums with no success, then I heated and poured water to cool hub quickly and hub released. Do not heat to the point where
hub starts to turns red

stuck aa drum

Hey Red, I had the same problem on a aa brake drum, I tried everything, then my Dad came by and said his Dad used to have this problem back in Pennsylvania (salt/rust) and what he told me was to just loosen the nut and drive it some and then check it, "bang it worked" off it came with no fighting it, sometime's it's that easy...... good luck Rich

this is the way we remove drums downunder

On Australian AA trucks we have Timken Diffs
on the drum of the timken diff there are two holes in which you can insert
1/2" threaded rod and use a puller to remove the drum
the puller of choice that i use is a Hydraulic puller made by Sykes Pickavant
once you have the puller installed we load up the hydraulic ram by screwing in the small handle
if it does not pop of straight away we then apply a little heat
this method has never failed yet
i am sure that the puller could be addapted to the US AA hubs
maybe you could also tap the hubs in an unobtrusive spot
if you have any questions contact me on

SOOOO how have you made out?? I am still trying to get the driverside hub off. Had to pack the whole thing up and reassemble so I can drive it to move it to another garage for the winter. I am going to try the loose castle nuts for the 20 mile drive to see if I can jar it loose... Good luck check out the link for my story.. "1931 rear end"

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all...
