Car differantial bolt up to AA transmission

Post by johnnydidd »

Due to the nature of the shape of my Doodlebug I am considering changing the rear end (Earlier post) will a car rear end bolt to AA transmission and if so which universal joint do I use? There shouldnt be any problem changing the transmission to a car transmission if the rear end wont match the AA transmission?????? I hope this makes sense. John

It won't bolt up without some welding. The driveshafts on the cars were one piece so you would have to do some welding. I'm sure you could find another truck rear end without too much trouble.

Red, thanks for the reply, the rear end is bolted to the frame now which makes a very rough ride I wont be using it for a tractor, just a fun car. Will the rear end torque tube bolt to the transmission?

What trans do you have?
28/29's had a three speed which would be the same as a caar while 30/31 would be a 4 sped which would be different.

This may be a shock to you. Ford didn't build doodlebugs. It is a creation of somebody elses mind. What you have on it has no relation to a stock Ford.

I realize that Ford didn t build Doodlebugs, these were made in the 30s and 40s due to fact the farmer didnt have the money or tractors were not available at the time WWll and etc. Mine was made from a 1928 Model AA Truck. It has a Model A engine with a four speed transmission, gear reduction after the transmission and a worm drive differantial. The rear end leaks oil bad and has a bad clank in it, the gear reduction has a bad leak, the transmiison has a uncovered universal joint which causes the transmission to leak very bad. Its a cute little Doodlebug I just want to drive it and use it in parades.

John: If you do get a car/p-u rear end installed, or a big truck rear, and use any type of suspension, then it won't be considered a doodlebug (homemade tractor), and thus subject to registration and plates. At least that's the way it is here in New Yaack. Joining a Model A Club near you is always a good idea. Those guys are usually parts hoarders, and have great knowledge. Buggies R Us....
