Clamshell for rear axle measurements
Hello everybody, does anyone know the measurement of the outside of the rear axle, where it meets the clamshell,or the internal diameter,of the clamshell itself,I have a pair of used ones, that I would upgrade, before beginning the restoration of my Grandfather's 1929AA I have several parts,(engine...transmission....sheet metal..) collected by him during years...(truck serve until 70's in his farm...) and I would restore them as a reserve parts....The truck is in very good shape, complète,and I will take great care of it ...
Thank you all in advance...
Wish you a Great Day.
Best wishes from Belgium, and from my Grendfather AA
Cheers.

Huh? What exactly are you looking for? I know the clamshells for a '34 BB truck are bigger than an "A" car. I honestly don't know if the "AA" clamshells are the same size as the "A" clamshells.

yea i agree he means those. I dont think they wear out, the slotted pin that holds the leaf to them and the spring eye bushing tend to wear badly.

Re: Clamshell for rear axle measurements
Hello,Gentlemen, that's exactly what I mean,I would know the internal diameter,of the big bore,it seems to be 3 inches, the ones I have are between 3 and 3.10 inches (out of round) I'll fill the gap with weld ,then ground an rebore them to initial diameter.the springs axles and locking pins are ok.
Thank You in advance,.
Wish you a Great Day.

The parts in the picture were from a 1931 LWB and are not the same as 1929.

Patrick:
How do you suppose your "clamshells" got out-of-round? Were the bolts & nuts loose that are suppose to secure them around the axle-housing?

They are not tight around the axle. There is a grease fitting to keep them moving. If they don't get greased metal wears and they get egged shaped. Not jut them but axle housing too.

Chris:
What you say makes sense, but I've never seen any worn that way. I have three rear axle assemblies and none of them were worn to egg-shape. Just lucky, I guess. Thanks for the explanation.
