Towtruck, as far as I know only the worm drives had safety wire, the 30-31 bevel gear rears did not.

thanks Kieth seems like nobody is sure which way to judge the safety wire I guess I will just lose the points jerry

I looked in the parts book and it shows the bolt for the worm drive has a hole
in it but the bolt for the bevel gear doesn't say it has a hole.

I cant help much but i can visually see and tell you the worm drive DOES have safety wire holes...

I searched my copy of the judging standards and no mention is made of safety wire on the rear axle(s).
There is a drawing of the "new" bevel gear and the bolts holding the torque tube in place have no wire or visible holes for wire.
They were pretty careful with depictions in the standards, sooo...

Note that the photo posted by spectria is the '29 bevel gear axle. The '30/'31 axle is not the same and was not wired. Below is the wording I have sent to the Judging Standards Committee regarding this for the 2014 supplement E revisions.
Torque Tube
The torque tube was designed for attaching a speedometer drive cap to the bottom of the tube with two screws in 1927 and possibly in early 1928 (see Figure E4-e4 under speedometer information). Starting in early 1928, the torque tube was changed to have a threaded opening on the right side for a speedometer driven gear bearing. This second torque tube design was used for the two worm gear type axles (d1 and d2). The tube flange bolts were safety wired.
The d3 bevel gear type axle used a torque tube unique to that axle. It included a threaded opening for the speedometer gear bearing. The tube flange bolts were safety wired.
The d4 bevel gear type axle used a heavier duty torque tube. The tube flange bolts used lock washers and were not safety wired. It also included a threaded opening for the speedometer gear bearing. In June 1930 a second grease fitting boss was added 2” forward of the original fitting. Prior AA’s had one grease fitting and Ford recommended that dealers drill and thread old stock and add the second grease fitting to better grease the universal joint.
