29 AA rear end

Post by blehigh »

I have just finished restoring a late 29 chassis. My questions are: 1. What is the fluid capacity of the rear end? 2. Will 120 weight oil work? and 3. I was told that a 50-50 mix of 90 weight and Casiite will work. Any truth to that? Thanks, boblehigh@yahoo.com

not sure the cap, but any modern gear oil will work, as there are a lot of additives they didnt have for the old thick viscus oils. I would not use the lighter oils in the trannies. They tend to 'pump' the oil out of the top of the shift tower, and the gears tend to not want to find their place as easy as with the correct weight oil in them.(They dont slow down fast enough to make a shift.)

As Bladehorse states modern gear oil will work, but be sure it is for use with yellow metals, this will lengthen the life of the ring gear whatever is left of it, I believe 2 quarts will do it, maybe three for topping up latter.

i thought someone mentioned that the 600W stuff was equivalent to 145weight oil.

if you have a farm supply store around they usually have a wide selection of thicker stuff.

Use 90-140 wt gear oil and add a can of STP.
