Express Owners

Post by Bradshaw »

Howdy all,

I know this information is probably in the AA Newsletter and or member information, but I wanted to see who on this forum actually has one, what stage of restoration or condition, level of completeness(you have all the parts).

Subject : Early 30 AA Express Truck

I have an April 1930 Express, correct spare carrier, high speed rear gears, 28/29 Warford with the "go around" brake shaft to clear the warford. It has three 5 hole Budd wheels dated 4/30 and 2 dated 5/30. Been through complete drivetrain, engine work done cylinders cleaned up new pistons, valve seats( I know not original), no babbit work done, but needs it I believe. Carb cleaned reassembled, 4 speed and warford gone through with some bearings replaced. Rear axle cleaned, new outer seals(were leather i believe), new brake linings, steel hubs turned to clean away grooves. Cab with new top wood, doors outer patch panels. Repo seat springs, cab rear corners. Primed with a napa brand primer. Frame blasted, treated with phosphoric acid, painted with flat black paint, probably needs redoing. 30 style headlight buckets, threaded radiator cap, 1/4 turn gas cap. New interior kit, glass, original popout switch and door handles restored. 98% complete, may need small hardware for express bed mounting(angle iron brackets). Sorry for rambling, just curious as to what's out there for Early 30 Express Trucks. Bradshaw

I can snap a few later, its not finished, bed disassembled for patch work. My father and I were working on it, I got married, and have a 5 year old daughter now, dad passed away last year, here we are 12 years after purchase. It s not much to look at. I have shipping box built on back, was considering sending off to be finished. Had some bumps in the road, it
Still sits in my garage. At least its been out of the weather the last 54 years. Bradshaw

My Early '30 (May 1930) Open Cab Express is currently a restored bare frame with front and rear axles installed. Transmission and Warford are rebuilt awaiting their turn. I am waiting on the metal man and Terry Burtz so I can continue.

I don't have a 30 but I have tried to post pictures of a 29. It's pretty much complete but could use some exercise and miscellaneous repairs. It's been awhile since I tried to post so I hope this works..........

Mine is a '28 Express. I just bought him last Sunday and here is his "homecoming" picture before I unloaded him from my trailer. Note the silhouette on the metal sign hanging from the Ford Service sign pole behind him; from the other side it reads "Carlton's Busted Knuckle Garage". His doors still have remnants of paint saying "Something GARAGE" (can't make out what they originally said). It still has the original engine with an AA prefix and an October 1928 number. In addition to having the early "top hat" style lug nuts it's one of the first AA's I've ever seen to still have its front Houdaille shock absorbers still on it with the shock arms and links and it still has one of the original engine splash pans attached. Don't know if you can see it in the shadow but it has the original spare tire mount on the side of the bed including the early top hat carrier lock stud nut.

Roy, That 29 is looking good! I see a Warford shifter peeking out the front of that seat riser.

Can you get me a head on photo of the shape of the hole cut in the seat riser where the shifter goes through?

Fred, I know you are excited about getting started on your 28!

I hope that these pictures will upload. These were taken before moving the Early 30 from my Father's house to my garage. The truck was enclosed out of the rain, not in a humidity controlled environment as shown by rust on the painted engine. Truck was dusty and needs a bath.

Here are a few pictures as of last week. We have done a bit more since then, but I have not taken any more photos! Still need to find a 1929 Express frame spare tire carrier,BAD. Will pay good for one if you have one.

You can't see real well but the color is actually blue rock green. In the sunlight the blue really shows in the green. Interior still needs its carpet etc...
