Damaged Speedometer Gear

Dear Ford Model AA Experts:

I've had a '30 or '31 rearend assembly with the torque-tube, wishbones, brake drums and wheels, attached in my back yard for a number of years. I was told it was a high-speed (that cracks me up!) 5.14 - 1 gear-ratio rearend when I aquired it. This morning, I unscrewed the speedometer cable nut from the front of the torque-tube. I did so because I wanted to see what gear-ratio was stamped into the speedometer gear. I had a bit of trouble getting the nut to back out. When I got it completely off, I noticed that several of the teeth on the gear were mashed and two broken off. No, I didn't romp on it hard enough to cause this damage. I'm wondering what might have caused the damage to this speedometer gear which I found to be stamped 5.14 - 1. By the way, the speedometer gear will not rotate inside the nut. Any ideas what caused the damage?

I've got a couple like that also, I assumed the speedometer or the cable froze up.

After I wrote, I got to thinking about it. When I got the rearend assembly, it did not have wheels & tires on it. So, I put them on, then rolled the whole thing into my backyard. If the speedometer gear(s) were frozen, then I may have done the damage by rolling the assembly. When rolling it, the driveshaft would have turned and caused the damage to the frozen gears. DARN!!! Sound plausible? If so, I guess this might be a learning experience for all of us AA fans. In the future, I will always remove the speedometer gear before rolling a rearend assembly.

I have a speedo gear for one, but not mine and to get the rights one the only person that answered my want ad said he wanted 275.00 dollars for one. I call that more than a learning experence.

The speedometer gear I (probably) ruined is like the one in the most far right photo. It's stamped in the same manner too. My truck has a 5.14 - 1 gear-ratio and the speedometer gears in it are fine, fortunately.

Thanks for the tip about Snyder's possibly selling this gear. If I ever decide to sell this extra rear axle assembly, I can tell the buyer where he/she might purchase the gear.

Drew the gears you see for sale are for Model A's not AA.

Does somebody still need a gear? I have 2 5:14 I think and only $40 plus shipping is all I would want. I no longer have the truck so no use to me. I think I paid like $75 for them but that was because you could not find them anywhere. Let me know
