4-Speed Pressure Plate and Clutch Disk

Post by ConversionT »

My '30 AA lost her clutch about two weeks ago. Adjustment is maxed out and throwout bearing seems to be functioning, so I'm guessing she needs a new pressure plate and/or clutch disk. I seem to remember reading in a service bulletin that Ford introduced a heavier-duty version of both the pressure plate and clutch disk for the 4-speed transmission. Cannot find anything but the standard versions in the online catalogs any of the usual vendors (Tam's, Snyder's, MAC's, Bratton's). Is there a heavier duty version and, if so, who sells them? Thanks!

Larger diameter clutch disc and heavier springs in the pressure plate. I think the truck clutch springs have dabs of yellow paint on those springs.

OK. Do you know what vendor carries them?

Best place to get a USA made clutch I hear is Fort Wayne Clutch. Just call them up and tell them what you need and they should be able to get you going. The pressure plates from the vendors are all the same, so you could get yours rebuilt and have heavier springs put in if you wanted to. Just my $0.02.

My AA is a 3-speed, but I still plan on having mine rebuilt and it is standard.

There should be lots of places that can rebuild any worn clutch disk.
I have found that pressure plates usually do not need to be rebuilt unless a badly worn clutch disk has scored it, or some springs are bad. If the pressure plate was scored it is likely you will need to reface the flywheel also.
