I cleared off the back of my 1928-29 Model A truck and was very surprised at what I found. I am eager to learn more about this rear end.
It is a worm drive and has a brake and planetary shift lever at each wheel so I assume it is a high-low rear end. Is it a Ruckstell? Every search I do on Ruckstell seems to end up with Model T applications so any help would be appreciated.
While it's not a Ruckstell, it is an auxilary gearbox of some kind on the torquetube in front of the worm-drive axle. If you could wire brush the box & determine the maker, it would be appreciated by the rest of us! Most of the auxilary gearbox/transmission manufacturers were proud enough of their productsto include their company name prominently somewhere on the casting, making our efforts to identify them a lot easier! there were a lot of them, & it's always fun to find a new one! thank you for sharing with us!!
I had assumed people have been working on these truck so long that a photo would tell all. I am learning that there are a lot of variations out there!
I was told from another contact that it was a Rock Mountain two speed. I did find some photos of Rocky Mountain rear mount transmissions for Model T's and mine looks very similar. Mine only has one shift linkage so it makes sense that it is a two or three speed gear box. I am content for now with this much information. I will eventually clean and inspect for manufacturer information when I get my "to do" list caught up.
Packrat: The photos are of two different rear ends right ? One is AA and the second is TT. Thanks for sharing, and they certainly are great finds. Best of luck ..
I keep making assumptions so help set me straight.
I assumed a TT was a model T dual rear and a Model AA was a Model A dual rear. That said the first two pictures (rear view and top view) are from my truck and it is a Model A truck (single rear) but a worm drive?? Did Model A's come with a worm drive?
The third picture of a rear end and gear box off the frame is just a picture I found that shows a Rocky Mountain gear box that I think look similar to mine making it more likely that mine is also a Rocky Mountain brand. I don't really know if it is off of a Model TT or Model AA. I assumed Rocky Mountain also made gear boxes for Model A's OR the rear end in my Model A truck was replace with a Model TT. That is the mystery I will need to solve.
My two Model AAs look like they have ring and pinion rear ends.
The Model A is a Car, pickup, or other commercial body on the car chassis. A model
AA Is the big truck doesn't mater if it has single or dual rear wheels.

I actually have a Model AA truck with a single rear end. The leaf springs are the same arrangement and size as my dual wheel trucks so it is not on a Model A frame. I will stop calling it a pick-up!
