Warford installation in a "31 AA
I've got a 7090-C u joint (or not) installed on the back of a 4 speed transmission that stops before reaching the end of the output shaft (see attached).
Is a spacer normally required here along with a u joint washer?
Is a modification to the u joint necessary?
Or is it the wrong u joint?
Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

Re: Warford installation in a "31 AA
The '30-'31 Warford did not connect to the 4-speed with a u-joint. There was a special gear that slipped on the input shaft of the Warford that matched the outer splines of the AA-4811 coupling shaft male gear. Then there was a internal splined coupling that slid over both the coupling shaft male gear and the special Warford gear. There were snap rings installed internally in this coupling to keep it from sliding too far front on the transmission male shaft gear or too far back on the special Warford input shaft gear. You are right, the standard u-joint is longer than the special coupling that was used.
The '28-'29 Warford was easier to install behind the 3-speed because it used all the standard u-joints that were there.
Sorry for the bad news.
Keith

When I used the 28/29 Warford behind a 4 speed I used u-joints that I modified using the short ends from two different u-joints ,finding the correct splines on the short end might be hard but they are out there ,I've done three that way

Re: Warford installation in a "31 AA
Keith, thanks to your's, and other members posts, I am somewhat familiar with ("the new supper warford designed and built exclusively for the new 4 speed AA truck") as these are unobtainable it seems, I am attempting to install a'28/'29 unit in a '31. Other than the input/output I'm guessing these are virtually the same considering the costs of retooling.
Everything I've been able to find on this subject, in the forum and past newsletters, leads me to believe this is achievable with the right parts.
Back to the 7090-C u joint, can any one tell me what the depth of the bore is on the (larger diameter) "input" end of this part?
Is there a u joint washer for the 7090-c to bolt it to the end of the 4 speed output shaft?
It's all Good.
John

You can see in the attached picture that there is a gap between
the end of the transmission shaft and the u-joint.

If you are installing a 1928/'29 Warford in a 1930/'31 you need an adqaptor and the U Joint.

Re: Warford installation in a "31 AA
Brian, I gave up trying to find one of those but was fortunate enough to find a really nice 28/29 warford.
Now it's just a matter of installing it.
I've got one u joint that fits both the output splines of the 4 speed and the input splines of the warford (same as model A splines) and another that fits the output of the warford and the 10 spline propeller shaft.
Thanks Bob for the drawing and for pointing out that there is a space between the end of the transmission shaft and the u joint. I also see that the u joint is right up against the the transmission ballbearing and that I will need to add some clearance between the bearing retainer and the u joint as I have none which contributes to the excessive gap in mine.
Chris I'd like to know more about this adaptor needed to install a 28/29 in a 30/31, that and if there is a larger u joint washer available to fit a 7090-c to the 4 speed transmission shaft.

I'm out of town right now and can't look in my parts book
but I think the washer you need would be BB-7095, I'm
not sure if there is a suffix after the part number.
