Canvas cover for AA stakebed??

Post by Rosenkranswa »

:?: I have an early '30 AA Stake for which I've been toying with the idea of fabricating a set of metal framing bows that would fit in the stakes and support a canvas top cover. I got the idea from a picture I saw of a GAZ AA used by the Russian army in WWII, but wondered if something similar was ever done in the early '30s for a commercial truck to cover the bed?? Has anybody ever done something similar?

Go to the Library of Congress web site:http://lcweb2.loc.gov/pp/pphome.html. Type in CCC for Civilian Conservation Corp and scroll through. Several covered 1 1/2 trucks. Or you can search by call #LC-USW3-057026-C for a 1934/35 Chevy with a covered body for inspiration.

Looking through the Library of Congress web site again Here is a 1929 AA stake bodied truck at call numbers LC-USF34-021936, & LC-USF34-021956 and LC-USF34-021902. Go to http://lcweb2.loc.gov/pp/pphome.html and scroll down to FSA/OWI; click on "number" and type in any of the above call numbers.

Hello Edwin,
I found the three photos. Is there a way to down load photos from the web site? The instructions for obtaining a copy says it can be done but gives no procedures for doing so.

Neil

Click 0n the photo to enlarge it then right click on the picture an it should give you a list of options which include "save picture as". Click on that and give it a name and click save and it should download it to your pictures.

But they are sneaky, Richard, that doesn’t work. :(

But this does – at least on this one picture.

Get to the page with the small picture. Click on it to enlarge it.

Then click on " Retrieve uncompressed archival TIFF version (170 kilobytes) "

A dialog box comes up asking if you want to save this file or open it now. Click on save file and you have it in My Downloads.

You can now do what ever you want with the picture

Okay,
I was able to save the picture by right clicking the enlarged picture. But, it is a low resolution.

When I click to get a .jpg line, the file shows up but nothing happens when I right click.

When I click on the .tiff line, the .tiff picture will not show up and this is probably becaues of my phone line connection.

My guess is that the picture I saved is the highest resolution possible (about 90 ppi). Anyone have an idea on this.

It takes about 300 ppi to get a good image in the newsletter.

Okay,
I just tried again and I am able to click on the .jpg line, get the .jpg file and then right click and save the file.

Clicking on the .tiff line still does not work for me.

Hi -

Here's the address to get copies.

http://www.loc.gov/preserv/pds/photo.html

Looks quite expensive. Photocopies seem to be cheaper, quicker etc than photos.

The prices are about the same as the Benson Research Center at "The Henry Ford". Photocopies are one $.25 but an 8x10 photograph or a digital image is $50.

I order digital images for the photographs to go into the newsletter for 2007. The printer requires 300 dpi to get a good reproduction. Photocopies are good to see what is available be not good for printing.
