Just minding my own business then................

I was just out driving the AA, all was well. about a block from home (lucky me) all of the sudden the truck while in gear coast to a stop with the engine running. I shift gears but no response. I then try reverse nothing. Any idea what happened. All looks good underneath. Could the flywheel have unscrewed itself from the motor? Any and all comments are welcome. Thanks

Broken "U" joint. broken input shaft to tranny, broken drive shaft, etc.

You got a project!!

when in gear and not moving does the speedometer show any mph, if yes then
the problem is in the rear axle.

Ok well the speedometer does not move when in gear and engine reeving. So we can discount the rear? I should mention that when I towed it home and parked it outside the barn. Then with the engine on it wouldn't go into gear. So i shut off engine put it in gear and backed it into the barn. Since then gears don't work. Point of reference, I put the engine in two months ago, has run like a champ for two months....until today. So where do I start, pull the engine?

How about pulling the clutch access cover and looking to see what is going on in there. Maybe there is an issue with the clutch throw out bearing assembly. If it went into rev. with engine off. Will it do the same in other gears? Try shifting into low then starting it up and see what happens. Try all gears this way. ( I'm starting to think tranny issue).

J check the clutch release bearing to see if it is is sliding freely on the pilot shaft, 'cause if it drags just a little you may have a clutch some time. Use a solvent or penetrating oil to free it up then after it is freed there is a grease zert behind the bearing grease it but not to much. this should save you a lot of work. Hope this helps :!: Shelby, Sacramento.

If the clutch looks good put it in neutral and pull the cover off the transmission
and try turning the main shaft, if it turns then the problem is in the u-joints or coupling shaft.

For a point of reference have you with the truck not running put it into a gear and tried to push the truck to see if it will move?

Just a thought --- do you have a Hi-Lo unit in the truck?. possibly a Warford,? if so it may have been bumped into neutral.

If you were able to back it into the garage under power, then your rear axle, drive-shaft, U joints, input and output shafts, Hi-lo, warford and engine(flywheel) are ok. Sounds Like a shifter problem, or a stuck clutch or TO Bearing..
Does the clutch pedal ride at normal height or is it loose?

In gear, I can push back and forth. No problem.

More info. Take off tranny cover. Thrust bearing goes in and out without sticking. Clutch pedal normal. Pull off shifter, everything looks normal. I put truck in gear and push it back and forth and the gears spin. When I start the engine, pressure plate spins and looks normal. I do get a slight sound from clutch area that I never heard before. That's what I have so far.

Sounds like the clutch disc center broke free. Does the engine turn over when you push the truck back and forth while in gear?
