29 bevel gear rear end

Post by s147881 »

I bought a 29 dump truck today with a bevel gear rear end but it has the 6 hole disc wheels. The bevel gear is different than my early 30 bevel gear. Is this a stock rear end? Good truck buy for 100 dollars.

The rear end that looks like the car of 1928-1948, that is in 3 pieces is a domestic Ford factory product. The torque tube is also unique for this rear end.

This might be the rear axle you have.

Yes - that is the rear end. Have these been reliable or advantageous over the worm drive?

There were very few 1929 AA's released with the bevel gear rear axle. I think the Ford intended that this rear axle replace the worm drive axle. But, this change-over didn't happen (reason not known). It seems that these rear axles were taken out of production in early 1929.

Hmm maybe they were trying it out in the real world and how to make improvements for 30. Or had some inherent flaw that immediately made them go back to the drawing board...

what ratio(s) were these rearends?

The 28-29 bevel gear rear axle was available in a 7.16:1 and a 5.11:1 ratio. These rears are unique in that the pinion was part of the driveshaft, not a separate gear. I have a high speed 5.11 rear end assembly that someone torched off the torque tube and driveshaft a few inches in front of the torque tube mounting flange. If anybody has a torque tube and complete shaft with either gear ratio I'd be interested in purchasing it.

Gone, but not forgotten: The Ford Indianapolis Service letters of April 27,1931 page 5 states: "AA-4029-B driving gear and drive shaft matched 5.11 to 1 have been reinstated for service to be installed in the 1928-29 Banjo type sear axle only".

The truck that this rear end is in has 4 speed and right hand brake. Engine is stuck and transmission is stuck in gear. Back wheels move when back is jacked up. Not sure of gear ratio.
