4 speed Transmission counter shaft question
I am working on the 4 speed transmission. The transmission counter shaft, part # AA 7111 which has 2 bearings and a spacer that the cluster gear rolls on has 9 thousandths wear. I am looking for a New shaft and have not had any luck. Does anyone have a new shaft they would be willing to sell? Any thoughts, is 9 thousandths to excessive of wear?

I have an unchecked one in a trans that is out of the truck. You can pull it and check it if you like. If you do not like it, you can put it back.

Re: 4 speed Transmission counter shaft question
When I was searching for a counter shaft the only vendor that had one was Van Pelt who had a used one in stock...
It is a 51-7111 on their parts list...
Scroll down..

I ended up replacing the 4-speed in my A pickup with a 3-speed....so I never needed to replace the counter shaft...

Re: 4 speed Transmission counter shaft question
I don't know if this is a realistic option but it's just a machined shaft with a notch in it.....maybe easily made ?
But I guess it needs to be hardened.....
Did you try Bert's in Denver? They have lots of original used parts....
There was a new one on ebay a few weeks ago..I think it sold for about $60....
Here it is..

Re: 4 speed Transmission counter shaft question
its easy to make one as I think its a standard size. MSC sells hardened ground stock. Just cut to length with an abrasive saw, and grind the notch for keeper. and .009 aint nada! Id worry if there is a pronounced step in the shaft that the bearing cut. The teeth are huge on these, and only had 1 tranny fail when the shaft was 1/2 cut thru at work. (Pressure angle became too much under heavy load and it scattered) If desperate, you can rotate the shaft and cut another locating notch. as the pressure is only on the top of the shaft. Keep end play to a minimum however!

Re: 4 speed Transmission counter shaft question
I'm looking at having a batch of these made, because I haven't been able to find any of these either. I'm waiting for the machine shop to get back to me with a price to see if the project is do-able. I forget what the Rockwell hardness the shaft has to be to withstand the use of needle bearings on it.
