engine compresson

what is good engine compression on a good engine. Mine hasn't much power,soots the plugs and runs rought. Have checked the fuel sys,new plugs,points
new. kicking my b-t, used to run great. ??????????????

65 lbs is pretty close to what one finds on a fresh engine.
Lower compression is okay but the main thing is to have the compression be pretty close between all of the cylinders.
Have you pulled the movable plate out of the distributor to see if the flexible wire underneath it is frayed, broken or shorting out? This will cause many of the symptoms you are experiencing.
Torque the intake/manifold bolts to be sure there is not a vacuum leak there. Also make sure the carburetor is tight to the intake manifold.

Sooty plugs are caused by running too rich.

sooty plugs = rich mixture. Flow test the carb jets. I redid all of mine and runs and starts great now. Was worth the time and effort.

Where do I get info on how to do the flow test ?
