Tires - what's right

Hi,

I have a 31 AA that needs tires.

I was looking through the Coker Tire catalog and have no idea which ones are the correct tread pattern. Does anyone have any information as to which tire would be correct for this truck?

The original tires were 32X6. Not a modern size.

I have not seen any Ford documentation regarding the tread design for the AA. Attached is an example of the tread on a 12-15-1930 AA from a Ford archive photo. About the best you can do is find a new tire with similar tread.

A 1931 would have dad 6:00x20 tires for the front and 6:00x20 tires for the rear if dual wheels were installed. For single rear wheels the size was 32x6. My opinion is that this translates to a 6:00x20 tire.

I have some old tires that have both the high pressure size and the balloon size marked on the same tire. The 30X5 high pressure tire has 6.00X20 balloon size also marked on it and the 32X6 also has the 6.50X20 balloon size on it. I'll have to look for the pictures.

Typically you can double the last figure and subtract it from the first number to translate the high pressure tire (75-95#) into the baloon size (40x8 high pressure is a 8.00-24 baloon).

I have duals in the rear, so it looks like I am going to go with 6 of the 6.00x20 from Coker.

They have a relatively similar tread pattern to the original pictured by Neil.

One more question!

What type of valve stem was used on the 1931 AA with duals in the rear?

Tire valve stem information is covered in the current RGJS on page E-27. This is double bent valve hardware (Schrader and Dill manufactures). Attached are the three figures in the upcoming #4 release of the RGJS.

Universal Tire in Lancaster PA will bend the stems to your specs. Just sent them the photo with the dimensions. I bought a full set of tires, tubes, and liners and they bent the stems for nothing. Good people.

well if you ever find youself in a pickle like i did and had tubes with the wrong valve stems and need to make another bend i learned the brake flare tool (minus the cone that does the flaring) around the stem and a plastic dead blow little taps will get a nice S bend in them...

Coker tire sells inner tubes with metal stems. Do you know if they are the right ones?

Dave, refer to the pictures I posted above. The stem shown in your link is not even close to looking like original. The only way to get "correct" (original) stems is to actually find originals and install them in tubes (rubber stem tubs so they can be cut off). Finding originals is very hard.
