Stake Rack Connections ("hooks") for rear center rack

Post by carlsoncg »

Neil (and fellow AA'ers), I need the center rear rack connector (hook) that joins the two rear racks together at the top (see black top center latch in picture below). My problem is that when restored the driver's side rear rack is the one with the center hook "on-top" so it is the one that would need the locking stake latch installed (where stick is pointing in picture). I know from Neil's posts that it is the passenger side rear rack that should have the "hook on-top" and it is the passenger side center stake that should have the stake latch mechanism installed. Before I give up and put the stake latch on the non-original side, does any one have (or know where to get) a rear center connection (hook) where the passenger side rear rack center connection (hook) is "on-top" of the connection (hook) mounted on the driver's side rack? I thought I could reverse the hook, but it is not symmetrical...

Neil had below post way back in Feb 2003, but perhaps someone has sourced these more recently and knows where/how to get the correct center connection (hook), i.e., passenger side rear rack has hook on top? Neil is what I am looking for described below as a "left hand" (B-2585L) or "right hand" (B-2585R) or neither?
FROM NEIL POST in 2003: I know a place in Denver, CO who makes truck bodies (modern day). They have rack connections which are very close to originals (and they are cheap). The hook end of the connections are bigger than original and can be ground down like original or used as is. There information is as follows (they will know nothing about Model A’s if you contact them):

Kois Brothers Equipment Co.,5200 Colorado Blvd., Commerce City, CO 80022, 303-298-7370, http://www.koisbrothers.com, e-mail - koisbros@koisbros.com
Stake Rack Connections (as of 4/02 - left hand B-2585L $1.36, right hand B-2585R $1.63, left corner B-2591L $1.75, right corner B-2591R $1.75).

Thanks, Carl

Carl,
It has been too long for me to remember if the rear connection is a left or right. The original Ford part is AA-88305. There is an April 1998 article containing 88-A platform equipment information at https://aafordscom.ipage.com/aafords-pdf/88ae.pdf (starting page 6 for connections). I have seen the same connections as Kois has in a local hardware store. So, that is a place to start. You could also call Kois and ask for a description of "right and left hand" or just buy each if the price is about the same.

If you email me, I will check my local hardware store to see if they have the correct connection.
Regards, Neil Wilson

Just do a search for stake rack parts. https://duckduckgo.com/?q=stake+rack+parts&t=ht&ia=web

These connections look like the ones that I have seen. With some grinding, they can be made to look original.

Thank you Neil and Bob. I thought there might be reproduction latches available. One of these current commercial latches should be able to look close enough to original and were probably what was used back in 1990 when the stake racks were originally restored.
