I am willing to get the 14-11/16" long mirror bracket made (out of steel). This is AA-17698 and was used starting May 1931. It was a hinge mounted bracket for the 82-B closed cab. It can be installed on both sides (originally Ford offered the left side only).

I have never owned one of these brackets and almost never see one for sale. One would be needed to allow mold to be made. Does anyone have one that they would loan for the project? Based on past projects, it would take six to twelve months to get a mold made using the original as the pattern.

Once the mold is made and tested, it can be used to make wax replicas which go to the foundry for making the bracket. The bracket will be some shorter than the original. I will need to find out the actual length of the end product.

I wish I had one to loan, two would be better. This is a problem on my truck, trying to see around the racks and what is behind. I wonder if a brass casting could be made up?

Yes, this bracket could be installed on both sides. It is a hinge mount for the 82-B closed cab. Why would you want the bracket made out of brass? The original Ford bracket was forged steel and dipped, black enamel finished.

Yea Bob, I am watching that auction. My goal is to have a mould made using an original as the pattern. The mould would be used to create wax replicas for a foundry to produce steel brackets with all of the holes in the bracket (so no machining would be needed).

Neil, It is hard to believe they cast all those little holes in this part. Is that what the drawing shows?
And, if you make a mold from an impression of an actual part, how do you make the poured cavity bigger to allow for shrinkage? Doesn't this produce parts smaller than desired?

The people at the foundries know what they are doing. They make the object they pouring out of wax then bed the object in a sand casting, heat the sand casting to melt the wax out of the mold then pour the casting material liquid in the mold, let cool then break the sand mold off the object. Then process is repeated on each and every part they are casting. For every single mirror bracket they make there is a wax molder of the mirror bracket made. There is very little shrinkage if any in the cast product. Shelby, Sacramento

The roughness in the cast part is caused from the sand in the mold that holds the hot metal

Thanks for the detailed description. This gives me an idea how/why a part can be cast with holes (not possible when using an original part in the sand). I have made two runs of 89-A express installation hardware. The straps, cross bars, "L" brackets are cast with holes (so no machining required except threading where needed). The shop I work with (in California) makes the molds and produces the wax replicas. The molds are expensive but are re-usable. The wax replicas are sent to a foundry. The more parts made for a run the price is cheaper per piece.

In the attached picture the left strap is the reproduction in my opinion. The threading was done after casting. Reproduction parts are normally quite different from originals. But these parts are excellent reproductions. I am sure that reproducing mirror brackets will turn out the same way.

I intended to use the mirror I currently have on the short arm, but the short arm has a recess in the hole for the mirror stud.

On the long arm, the threaded stud of the mirror will not go all the way through the mounting hole because there is no recess.

Can you tell me what mirror was used with the long arm or what is available now?
