Bevel gear rear end

Post by Jeff Brown »

Hi,

Have just pulled apart the 30/31 diff on the '29 truck I am working on - yes I know it is a real bitsa! The bevel gears are quite pitted over about half the teeth- looks like there may have been water in the diff at some time. Seeing as how I will have to replace the gears, how difficult is it to fit the 5.14 ratio gears in place of the current 6.6 ratio. I did a search on this forum to see if there were any answers but could not find anything - not even sure there are any 5.14 gears available. Any info appreciated.

Thanks

Jeff

For what it worth the same rear end with the 5:14 gears was used in WWII Scout Cars. This is a vehicle that looks like a Half track but has wheels instead of tracks.

I think the ring gear would work but they changed the pinion gear in 1932 and again in late 1934.

someone correct me if I'm wrong but I think the standard (6.6) and high speed (5.14) gear sets (ring and pinion) are interchangeable. the axel and drive shafts are all the same, you would also need the correct speedometer drive and driven gears, There are high speed rear ends out, they are (were) stamped 7-36 on the lower rear edge of the housing flange, they also had a tag. the standard (6.6) were not stamped.

Yep, mine has the car front end and gets steadily newer as you go to the rear!. 4 speed tranny also. Everything absolutely worn out and corroded, especially the springs, but I'm getting there.
